: 70 Chevelle L78, WIW?
704EVER Sep 25th, 08, 10:27 PM Now comes the all important question, what's it worth? I know a lot of you guys have been following this car in the Resto section. I just completed what I believe to be as close to a Concours frame off, nut-bolt, restoration as I could have done. I'm still missing a couple of very small items but not significant ones. It's a matching number motor and trans, the original rear I believe is gone. All the important dated components are there and restored. The list of casting numbers and dates of all the components is all too long to list here, but believe me they are with the car. As much as possible of the original car has been restored. By that I mean the stainless trim, chrome, wheels, 1/4 deep centers etc. I don't have the finished pictures yet but I will have tomorrow, it's sticker day. I believe this to be a one of one car as it was ordered with a LeMans blue paint code. All thoughts are welcome.
69396ss Sep 25th, 08, 10:32 PM Not much to comparison shop with. I feel it's a historically significant, one of a kind car with the sky being the limit when 2 people with unlimited funds start bidding on it.
How can you price it?
704EVER Sep 25th, 08, 10:42 PM I can't John, that's why I'm asking and throwing it out there. I'm planning on taking it to Abacoa next Saturday if it's not raining and the next best show is an AACA show in Stuart on Oct. 25. I'm going to sign it up for that one and see how it does. The hard part is over, now I can have some fun and relax with it!:beers:
FameSS-396 Sep 25th, 08, 10:43 PM Mike,
That is SWEEET!
Are you going to the Tower tomorrow?
I want to see this car.
rubadub Sep 25th, 08, 10:43 PM To be honest with you, I haven't been following it, but it looks like you pulled out all the stops.
Just a few things, before I take a shot at it, if your up for it.
A couple of pictures of what it looked like before you started, this should include all the rust prone areas on the underside, like under rockers, toe-board- cowl area, underneath the gas tank at the ends of the trunk supports, and inner wheel wells where they adjoin the trunk.
Then pictures of any sheet metal that was replaced, any bare metal and what type of filler, primer and paint.
Sounds like maybe a lot to ask, but without knowing this I don't think I could give an honest estimate.
This is pretty much all on the body area, but thats where the most money comes into play.
Rob
Dave Birdwell Sep 25th, 08, 10:49 PM Hard to say, Mike. The phrase "whatever the market will bear" comes to mind. The car is as nice as any LS6 and I've seen them go for $100,000. Rarer than an LS6, and a special order color to boot...BUT.....the market is soft right now, so until the car gets out and gets seen and judged by others, there's no telling. Bring it up to Chevy-Vettefest in October, here in Chicago, get a Gold Spinner for it and that would help.

I hear you loud and clear on this aspect Rob, the car is on the lift now and I'm putting the stripes on the drive shaft tomorrow. The underside pictures are just as important as the pretty pictures. I just don't have that many of them in my computer right now, the car has been on the ground for a month. The ones I do have right now show every speck of dust and they look horrible, as they were taken right out of the body shop. The underside of the trunk was the most decent picture I had, but the braces and the rest of the floor look just as good. This car was completely media blasted and it was a solid car to begin with. I didn't need to do any floor or trunk replacement panels.

Hey Fred, no Tower Shop tomorrow night, I had hoped for it but I can't do it. Maybe next week before Abacoa, I'll definetly let you know.

If I can I borrow some gas money??? I'll bring it!!! Dave, I can't wait to have this car looked at. P.S. Thanks for all your help. I wouldn't have bit the bullet here without your input.
Dave Birdwell Sep 25th, 08, 11:10 PM Lets make it a party. I'm trying to get the convertible done for it. November 22 weekend.

Thanks Mike, its hard to give an estimate without the documentation. But you sure do some outstanding work.

704EVER Sep 25th, 08, 11:23 PM Thanks Rob, I've only learned from the best right here!!!

Now that's just 5-1/2 hours away from me. keep me posted and I'll join the party.
704EVER Sep 25th, 08, 11:34 PM 5 1/2 hours for you, probably 30 for me, one way. It's not completely out of the realm, I'm curious to see how it does down here in Stuart, to start. Again, I know how these shows work, I could get beat out by a PT Cruiser with some flashing lights!!!

Well Mike, when I read that phrase I wonder just how important it is to try and figure out what it's worth. Sounds like you are not planning to sell in the short term, am I right? I would just get a professional appraisal for insurance purposes and leave it at that for now. I know this is a cliche, but when you are ready to sell, the market will determine the value. Personally, I think a lot of these "WIW" questions are more suited to people who are "currently" in the market to sell or considering the "purchase" of a vahicle. Just my opinion.
Now, having said all that, I think the car is absolutely beautiful. Lemans Blue is my favourite colour and it looks dynamite on that 70. You have indeed done a terrific job
Sean70SS Sep 26th, 08, 1:05 AM That is a beautiful car!!!!!! Enjoy it!!!

Hey Don, I guess I'm looking for some opinions on what this car may be worth finished, if for nothing else it will calm my nerves. To say I'm a little nervous about what I have invested in this car would be an understatement. I know how easy it is to be upside down on these cars as well. In this economy, the only reason I went out on a limb with this car and restored it to this level was because of it's uniqueness. I'm hoping that alone will protect my investment in this car. I've also had many nice driver quality cars that I never considered investments but to me, this car is a whole different story. Being self-employed, as I am, is a scary situation these days. What the future holds for all of us is scary thought in itself. For the short term, I'm looking to have some fun with the car showing it. Long term, who knows. As far as the insurance goes I believe I have that covered. Thanks for your thoughts.
oldtimebaseballfan Sep 26th, 08, 11:18 AM Mike, I have followed your resto and am impressed with the car and your work.
To put a value on it...I was thinking to start with an L78 and a 4 speed, then add a percentage because of the unique color for 1970.
The percentage to add is tough to say. I wouldn't add as much as say an L89 option would command. Does anyone know if any L89 optioned 70 Chevelles have sold? Or have any L78 convertibles sold?
The value of the L89 and the convertible would be interesting to compare to the L78. Then you would have a high and a low. At least it is somewhere to start.
69396ss Sep 26th, 08, 1:00 PM Well, this is a marginal educated guess.
I honestly believe I can sell my LS6 Clone for $55K Minimum.
The cosmetics on your car are fresher.
Yours is a numbers matching L78.
More importantly, a one off Custom 69 Color rendering it a Historically significant, Blue Chip Collectible.
Is it fair to "guess" that your car could realistically bring upwards of 3 times my car?
I would guess it would.
$150K would be my guess but the sky's the limit with 2 collectors involved in a bidding War.
I realize it's almost irresponsible to even guess, as only 2 bidders can really set the price.
Nobody else will know because there's nothing else to compare it with.
As Tim said, the only way to come close is look at L78 Verts for a Ballpark.
704EVER Sep 26th, 08, 10:00 PM Thanks for the input guys, I guess I just need to step back and take a deep breath, then count my blessings. I've never been this deep in a car and it's scary. It doesn't help every morning hearing about the Big Bailout or Wallstreet will collapse stories, I think I'm more worried about that than anything else. I'm sure everything will work itself out!!!
Don_Lightfoot Sep 26th, 08, 10:53 PM Mike, I guess you need to determine if the car is an investment or for enjoyment. If it's for an investment, then the value will always be on your mind. If it's for enjoyment, then let the chips fall where they may.
I got back in the hobby in 1991 and the four musclecars I had before the Chevelle were all sold for less than I had in them. I've always taken pride in my cars and haven't hesitated to spend money (if I have it) to get it to where I want it or to keep it at a certain level. For me it's all about enjoyment. Everybody approaches the hobby in a different way and I have no problem with the individual having a car for investment purposes.
So, how's that for "Philosophy 101" :D
ccpd166 Sep 26th, 08, 11:47 PM Hi all what nights do the cars go to Tower SHops. I am in Coconut Creek would like to bring my 70 SS down.
