408 CI BBC
38.3CC domed pistons, forged
292 heads, 124CC chamber, mild port work, 2.19/1.88 valves. Flow numbers very similar to 781, but mine flowed 3-4cfm better than all charts i have seen.
so 9.8-1 compression, assuming a tight .040 quench
XE274 cam, 230/236, .553/.555
1.72 roller tip rockers
edl,oval RPM
750CFM holley vac, 3310
windage tray, stock oil pump, dave Small body HEI,
1-3/4 headers, with 2-1/2 inch X all the way out to super turbos, through 3.55 gears and a muncie 4 speed.
Can I get a DD2000 or E.A3.0 for estimated engine output??
All going into a 68 nova.
Will the comp cam be tame enough for daily driven summer driving. IE. 7 days a week, 40-100 degrees.
I need sometype of vaccum for brakes. hoping for roughly 13 inches at 800RPM.
The other cam I have on mind is Harolds 280/288, the DCR doesnt work out as well, so Im thinking of the comp, if it has good street manners. Is the XE274 really that loud, as in ticking? Need some real life opinions of this cam

I couldn't find any nitrous anywhere in your combo.....

Hmmm....sounds ok I guess, but I think you should send the car over to my place for "testing." :D
Sounds good to me. I have two 68 Novas and one is getting a big block as soon as my engine mounts arrive at my door. Good luck with it, should be a handful. graemlins/beers.gif
it seems ok to me, maybe a little smaller cam would better suit your gears and compression. speaking of compression, those pistons must have a fairly decent sized dome on them to get 9.8 to 1 with 124cc head on a 408 don't they?

your combo is very similar to mine as far as the engine goes.......built several 396 with about the same specs.......and you would being seeing about 360-380 hp at the flywheel with your combo depending on the tune........maybe alittle closer to 400 hp depending one the heads on how well they have been worked over........
my combo in my z is a 414 (396 .090 over) with 10.2 to 1 compression, worked over 750 3310-2 holley, torker 2-0 intake single plane, delta cam 233/239 @ .050 with .548/.550 lift hyd.,1.72 roller tip rockers, ported closed chambered heads with 2.19/1.88 valves,th350 tranny with 2800 stall and 2.41 gears. car weights in at 3900 lbs. the engine last time out was strong enough for 98 mph 1/4's but with a 2100 stall it couldnt get out of the hole well and would run 14.40's. this car is putting down right a 300 hp to the ground.
i have changed the stall from 2100 to 2800, just installed a better flow exhaust, i'm pulling the 2.41 rear end out and installing another posi with 2.73 gears.
i found out just a few weeks ago the cam i have is installed retarded. so bring the cam back into phase should help out the lower end alot.
the current cam is only allowing 5.5" of vacuum at 600 rpms and 10.5" at 1000 rpms.
anycase it might be wise to check the phasing of the cam using udharolds quick and dirty degreeing method to make sure cam is installed somewhat correctly if you dont plan on degreeing it in.
your combo sounds good.........watch your deck height those pistons i assume are the trw forged units that are the direct replacement of the 375 hp 396 pistons.......which i have used alot of them........and on a undecked block give about .015" deck clearence so running a steel shim head gasket would keep compression up. i try and keep the quench around .035"
also to help aid flow i take the head gaskets and trace the opening on the blocks deck and open the valve reliefs on the block and chamber the bore some. and do the same on the heads.......so no in comming air/fuel mixture is running into any edges where the head meets the block.
similar engines of this build with proper gearing and with automatics have ran low 13's in a 3600 lbs car.......
your combo will run good on the street and have for me provided enough vacuum for brakes......just this last combo in my z just so happen to have the cam retarted (might be because it was a reground cam with a very used timming gear set)
your engine will rev real nice past 6000 rpms and very good pull. not sure how the manual tranny will effect e.t's but you should be able to get more hp to the ground then i do with automatics.
