crazychevelleman Sep 25th, 08, 2:01 AM 69396ss your selling your car!

69396ss Sep 25th, 08, 4:09 AM I tossed that out there just to test the market, and it's made me think quite a bit in the last day.
it had a flury of activity in the first 24 hours bidding up to $40K and having at least six requests to stop the auction and name my price.
I thought that if I take a loss at $50K in this market, that I could make up the difference buying my next car as $50K can buy you a whole lot of car.
Well I spent hours on Ebay yesterday and came to the conclusion that the reason the market is so soft, is because the market is flooded with $20K cars with poor cosmetics.
i was hoping to get into a numbers matching 427 69 Vette or maybe a nice 70 396 Vert, but as I looked at these types of cars in this range I found they were inflicted with heavily pitted frames, painted over rust scale, horrible chassis detail etc.
The more I looked at what sold, what didn't, the prices, and the caliber of quality, the more I think I need to pull my auction listing.
I realize my car isn't numbers matching and it's somewhat apples and oranges, but I don't think I could sacrifice cosmetic detail for the sake of a stamped VIN PAd.
All I saw out there for sale was Junk to be quite honest about it.
I think this might be a mistake.
I had a solid offer to end the Auction for $47,500, and while that would be a loss for me, proves that cosmetic quality and attention to detail hold a very strong weight in this market.
It proves to me that numbers and pedigree are no longer the "be all end all" and that the market isn't soft, rather it's flooded with poor quality caliber cars.
There still appears to be a strong market for quality and detail regardless of pedigree.
It settles the argument in my mind, that a well done recreation "Clone" with desirable options and cosmetic detail can compete with matching numbers cars of lesser quality.
I have a $50K reserve on this car, and would likely regret taking it as I don't think I could replace it as I previously thought.
Redmanf1 Sep 25th, 08, 4:28 AM Nice looking car
FerrariTruck Sep 25th, 08, 5:23 AM I'll be honest when I read you were asking 50k I thought it was a little farfetched. I am by no means a chevelle expert but i have learned alot here and I love watching the barret jackson auctions.
However once I saw the pics of your car and read over all the details I was just amazed!!! Everytime I clicked on a picture all that came out of my mouth was "that ***** is bada$$" for lack of a better word. I honestly love looking at cars that have been restored to factoy specs, makes feel nostalgic just looking at all the complete engine components, stickers, markings and labels. As far as your interior goes, well I was kind of on the fence about going with a complete red interior but you just pushed me over:yes:
You have a great car and even I'll feel some regret if you were to sell it.
Bisquit037 Sep 25th, 08, 5:59 AM Nice car man. 50k is cheap for a car with that much detail. Hold on to it for a while.
oldtimebaseballfan Sep 25th, 08, 10:57 AM John, very nice. Good luck with the auction.
chevy kevy Sep 25th, 08, 11:33 AM That red interrior is tits  that would look sweet in a all black car:yes:
70L34 Sep 25th, 08, 11:36 AM That really is a beautiful car. I agree that an exceptional restoration will bring serious buyers out of the woodwork. I have been doing a little window-shopping now that the market has cooled, and there are really very few good deals out there unless someone is in dire need of the $ and has limited/no access to the internet....
69396ss Sep 25th, 08, 1:20 PM Well that's my concern, replacing the car. As I spent hours yesterday on ebay with current, and completed auctions, I saw very little that I would consider replacing it with that would consist of a better investment of matching numbers.
Corvettes, Chevelles or Mopars.
Of course, time would be on my side over the Winter, but my fear is that it won't be replacable @ $50K'ish.

I think your crazy for even considering letting that car go for 50K'ish. If someone steals that car from you for that kind of money, watch it show up in Jan. at one of the auctions and roll across the stage for a lot more.!!!! Clone or not!!!

I agree. I think it's worth more than $50k easily. Look at what some of the hemi-clones bring at auction. If you're bent on selling it, I'd go the auction route or Hemmings. Also with ebay you never know if a winning bidder will actually come through with the money.
70ChevelleRagtop Sep 25th, 08, 2:33 PM "Obviously it wasn't built to flip and make a buck, it was built with an obsessive dedication to make it right."
That's an understatement! lol :D
Bunz-T Sep 25th, 08, 4:42 PM John One thing to consider should you decide to go the auction route is the added expense. Once auction fees , transportation, cost to attend. etc. are tallied it may take $60K to be the same $50k today. One thing is a given right now. This country, and entire planet, are facing some real financial problems that are not going to go away anytime soon. There is not one person here are anywhere else that can come anywhere close to predicting the shape we will be in come spring. Good money says the worst is yet to come.
You know that I am for you but them two square dice you are thinking about chunkin' to the other end of the table will show numbers that effect only your money.
Good Luck on your decision.
davewho1 Sep 25th, 08, 10:36 PM Keep it - it's money in the bank. At least wait 'til this financial fiasco is past and prices go back up. You've got a lot of blood, sweat and tears in that car, no way should you take a loss on it.
It's a gorgeous car, enjoy it for a while. :D  :beers:
Purely my humble opinion. :boring:
69396ss Sep 28th, 08, 3:43 PM Car has been sold for $55K.
Perhaps some money left on the table, but a fair medium for buyer and seller alike.
Several potential buyers were asking me to close the auction, he was the most agressive and got the car.
The market is not soft for the quality cars and numbers is not the "be all end all" with these cars.
Quality, and attention to detail is what commands the price.
The market is flooded with $25K-$30K cars and that's what's taking the beating in this market.
The quality cars are out there and holding their own.
Obviusly, the rare, high horse numbers cars with the same level of cosmetic attention are still the Heavy hitters, but I'd say the the market has turned to appreciate a high level of quality, and desirable colors and options as a substitute to the unobtainable $120K thouroughbreds.
704EVER Sep 28th, 08, 3:46 PM Good luck in your new search John, I hope you find what your looking for.
69396ss Sep 28th, 08, 4:00 PM Thanks Mike, and perhaps an indication for you on the healthiness of the market for the top notch thouroughbred your selling.
Hotch Sep 28th, 08, 4:18 PM If you're looking for a Vette, take a look at this one.

I should add, this guy sells nice cars. My dad bought a 64 T-bird from him. I've seen this car in person and while I'm no expert on Vettes, it shows really nicely and the guy says it drives very solid.
704EVER Sep 28th, 08, 5:15 PM Thanks Mike, and perhaps an indication for you on the healthiness of the market for the top notch thouroughbred your selling.
It's not for sale yet John!! I actually hope I can hang on to this car for a while, if I can weather the storm I'll keep it. We have our best show season just starting down here, the winter months have our biggest shows. All I need to do is ride out this lousy economy and keep at least some work flowing. Who knows what the future holds, Wall Street blues, Election year, Holidays around the corner, too many variables in play here.
mr 4 speed Sep 28th, 08, 10:07 PM John, the end of an era and soon to be the start of another...I am sure the new owner will be impressed..has he seen it in person yet?
69396ss Sep 28th, 08, 10:56 PM He's picking it up Tuesday. I wiped her down today and I still get impressed by her when I walk around her.
There's something about this Red on Red, Black Stripe, Big Block 454 that just goes together right.
If he's dissapointed, I'll keep her in a minute.
If it wasn't for the mid year vette fever I've been working myself into for the last few days, I'd back out of it.
