: Musclecar with the most "intimidating" look?

In your opinion, which of the above cars had that "nasty" look? I've based this on appearance (EG - stripes, graphics, hood scoops, stance, engine size badges, etc.). I have not included cars like COPO Chevelles (sleeper look), COPO Camaros (small cowl hood was all) or Corvettes (sports car). There are obviously lots of other cars that were nasty, but perhaps they just didn't "look" nasty. Also, there is only room for 10 options in the poll. Hopefully you can have some fun with this.

For me, there was just something about the 69 1/2 Six Pak cars that looked NASTY.

I would have to say that the "Nasty" look belongs to the '70 Dodge Challenger R/T

I'll have to discount the factory experiment drag cars. Wouldn't likely see one on the street back in the day. I did see a local with a Buick GSX in Saturn Yellow and that does it most for me, knowing that it runs with 510 ft/lbs Torque. I never saw one back then, but since then I have and have to say that the Six Pack Mopars are truly Bad A$$ street machines...

I agree...

Not only the "lift off" hood with 4 hood pins and the big scoop, but the black wheels without hubcaps!

For a "Factory" car, IMO the Six-Pak cars look the most intimidating...

I love the 70 Chevelle, with the fender bulges and the domed hood... It does look aggressive, but a little more civilized, partly to do with the wheel choice. the SS wheels look fancy but not really "intimidating"...

The Judge with the graphics and no trim rings on the wheels looked pretty good, but it still had the same hood as other GTOs...

Heres a little visual.
Just by looks alone. I hate myself for saying this but I think the Shelby, With the stripes and scoops looks the "nastiest". I can't get myself to vote for it though, So I will go with choice #2, The Judge.

I picked the Hemi Dart, but one of the most intimidating or lethal looking rides, is a 1962 Plymouth Fury Max Wedge.

These cars were called ugly of which I guess they are in a way, but you take an all white one, with black buckets, hood scoop, the body raised just a tad, with just a slight forward rake, 10'' tires out back, and 8'' on the front.

Solid black walls with dog dish caps, two pipes just visible under the back bumper.

It just doesn't get any better then that.:)

Even though I'm a Chevy guy, the Mopar B bodies have always demanded my respect. Nothing looked meaner in the 60s than a dark colored Roadrunner or GTX cruising down Telegraph at night, especially if accompanied by the sound of a 440 or 426.

I have always been a Chevy guy, but ever since I was a little kid, I thought Mopar looked more intimidating. Looking back, I knew the interiors were chincy, and I figured the money they didn't spend on the interior, they put into the motor. Remember, this is how a 15 year old thought in the 60's.
This statement doesn't include the "Fine Carithian Leather" they used in the Cordoba interiors:wacko:

Bought a 69 Plymouth GTX.. nothing more than a roadrunner with chrome...anyhow 440-385 h.p. 4 speed. If you remember it had a hood a half mile wide with side fake scoops. At idle that hood would shake, but hammer it and it would quiver. Old polyglas tires made for ill handling, but if you could aim it straight, watch out! Spooked a lot of Camaro owners back then. Had what we called the Chrysler "ching ching " starter. Remember that sound?

Interesting poll! I, too, chose the 6-pack cars. They just looked more bad a$$ sitting still! I don't think it shows any lack of allegiance to our Chevys by saying so either.

I was driving a '69 Camaro to high school (had it before I was old enough to drive!), and I have the Chevelle in the driveway now...along with a Dodge Intrepid, a Chrysler Town and Country, and a Plymouth Acclaim. I'm still a Chevy guy at heart, but in the last 10 years Chevy's designs have been less than stimulating.

I assumed the '70 Chevelle was an SS with stripes. I voted for that due to the body style (bulges, shape, grille, etc) just looks muscular and intimidating. Of course the '68 Hemi-Dart and '64 T-Bolt are more intimidating but aren't true musclecars in the sense the others are. They were factory race cars, not street legal, not available to the general public, and produced in very low numbers.

...Had what we called the Chrysler "ching ching " starter. Remember that sound?

It was a gear reduction starter, something you hear quite often these days.

Up to 1961 Chrysler used direct drive starters, usually purchased from Autolite, which became Prestolite when Ford bought a chunk of Autolite and the rights to the name. The new Chrysler starter was a reduction gear design, giving that unique whine when the starter is engaged. As a result of this, the number of teeth on the ring gear changed. Thus the two starter designs are not interchangeable.

But, with the Chevelle, it could be just a 396/350 HP car (which wouldn't be as intimidating as an L78/LS6)...

I too will agree that T-bolts and Hemi Darts are very intimidating, but how often were they seen on the street? The price and marketing and limited numbers meant these mainly (always?) went to racers... Were they even DOT-legal? Could you actually register it for the street?

I think this picture of the a12 RoadRunner 6-Pak car is a little better than that previously posted This shows the black wheels with NO hubcaps... All business, but a true streetcar...

I preferred the sleeper look of the COPO cars. No one knew what you had and the psychological effect was neat. A friend had an orange '69 six pack Super Bee and that was about as factory street racer as you could get back then at a reasonable price. The young lads at the gas stations sure were wide eyed when he pulled off the hood to check the oil. He checked the oil a lot. ;) To me, the best looking musclecar was the Buick GSX. Buick knew what a musclecar needed for rubber.

you really have to give all the big 3 styling guys a lot of credit for the profiles they put on the street back in the '60's and early '70's; making it a tough vote. however, if i have to choose, in my opinion (not the first time i said it on here), there is just something about the rear elevation view of a '68 chevelle (i know it wasn't on the list but humor me here) with those wicked little lenses (like a grimace) when it is sitting up on L60's that just makes the hair stand up on my arms. the other one i always loved was a 69 GTX. something about the full size car and that raked look, like it qualified for a speeding ticket when it was parked, that is still one of my all time favorites.

I have always based the intimidation factor on whatever it is that you see in your rearview mirror at a light. I've always used that as a marker because we've all been there.....sitting at the light in the ride of your choice, look into your rearview mirror as it rolls in behind you and to a stop. Thought to yourself, crap! Hoping that the reason the image is a little distorted is because of the lope of your cam. A little irritated because he limo tinted his rear window and with his black interior you can't see ***** inside his car even though it's noon in July. All you can see is the gleamimg grill, wide open hood scoop or scoops and you can tell that by the amount of roofline you can see, even though you cant see them, theres gotta be a little bit rubber out back to warrant that rake. So for me anything that fits that image works Hurst Olds, Cuda, Roadrunner it all makes me miss the light turning green.

A car not mentioned so far that I thought was tuff lookin was the 67 Corvette Stingrays with the 427 badges on the hood scoop, side pipes and some fat tires on the back.

Aside from beauty and just for that shear grunt muscle look I think "THE MACHINE", a 390ci Read/White/Blue AMC which looked a lot like a 64 Nova had the most intimidating look; however, the 68 GTS 383 or HURST 440 Dart GSS was impressive. Then there was the Mystical 67 Acadian 427 HT that DOC Dixon ran - LOL

I'm not saying a Hemi-Mopar or BBC Chev wasn't but the cars I mention, beauty was disregarded for that Grunt Performance appeal.

Other then that 67 2 Dr Sedan Acadian packing a 427 I remember as a teen, I think my friends Plain Jane 69 2 Dr Sedan Hemi-Corinet just stopped everyone in there tracks; however, that Hemi had Solid Lifters and not being much of a Mechanic he could never get the real potential that thing could muster.

A 70 Chevelle SS in black would also make the list.

The Cuda's are just sweet looking cars, but the graphics are a bit loud for my taste.

A black 68 Charger also makes this list.

Tbolts still look like 64 Fairlanes. Nice looking cars, fast in the day, but not intimidating.

Darts, well, look mostly like, well, Dodge Darts.

Older Shelbys were cool, but are just nice looking older Mustangs. Never noted for brute power. The new ones have way too many graphics and stuff but they do have the market on brute power pretty well covered.

If time and money ever permit, my Chevelle will be black.

I guess you had to watch a thunderbolt make a 1/4 mile run to see what was nasty. All the cars looked nasty, but you had to see them run to decide

haha nice monte. my buddy has a 70. But I'm going to say the Cuda. The GSX is a pretty nasty car. My old boss used to restore those things. They were all pretty sick!!
