I'm hoping someone can tell me about this welder. I have the opportunity to purchase one along with a cart, tank, and a spool of wire for $500. Is this welder sufficient for typical tasks encountered during a chevelle restoration? And what do you think of the price? I couldn't seem to find much online as I think it is 10 yrs old. Thanks in advance.:beers:

Here's what I can tell you. Miller welders are one of the best out there, and I have no doubt that a well-maintained 10-yr old unit can still give you years of service. Anything over 100 amps would be sufficient to weld sheet metal panels and frame repairs comfortably up to 1/8" thick.
Here's a link to the machine I bought this summer. Hobart was purchased by Miller and this machine is built with many of the same internals found on similar Miller units. In fact, mine even came with a Miller gun attached.

I went through the welding supply house that we use at work, so I got a few bucks offf but at the end of the day I got the machine, the bottle of 75/25, and a 3-lb spool of steel wire for about $575. I got a more powerful, brand new machine for just a little more $ and I'll never outgrow it.
(As for a cart, I welded mine together using scrap material and it came out awesome!)

You may want to check into pricing on a Lincoln, Hobart, or Miller 140-Amp machine. There are some sellers on e-bay that offer free shipping.
Good luck!

Thanks for the input. After finding the owners manual online, my only concern is that the wire speed can't be set below 220 ipm. I noticed on all of the newer models the wire speed can be set much lower. Do you think that will make welding with this unit more difficult than the more recent models?

That doesn't sound right at all (perhaps a misprint in the manual??)
A number like 20 ipm would be more believeable. As a comparison, I butt weld 18 gauge panels at 20-30 ipm on my Hobart.

I guess it could be a misprint. This is exactly what it says:

Auto Arc 120
Specifications:

Rated Welding Output---------------90 A @18 Volts DC, 20% Duty Cycle
Amperage Range----------------------------------------------30 - 130
Maximum Open-Circuit Voltage DC------------------------------------28
Amperes Input at Rated Load Output 115 V,60 Hz Single-Phase-20(0.59*)
KVA--------------------------------------------------------2.8 (0.86*)
KW--------------------------------------------------------2.4 (0.043*)

Wire Type and Dia:
Solid/Stainless-------------------------------------------.023 - .030 in
Flux Cored/Aluminum-------------------------------------.030 - .035 in
Wire Feed Speed Range At No Load----------------------220 - 700 IPM

I was told this whole package cost $1200 when purchased new and can buy it for $500, however, I'm thinking for the few extra $$ ($618 no tax/ free shipping) a new Millermatic 140 will probably be a better purchase.
Do you guys agree? Thanks.

Maybe "At No Load----------------------220 - 700 IPM" means that's how fast it spits the wire out when not welding.

Buy the Millermatic 140 and don't even look back. Some of the sheet metal on these 40 year old cars is just plain nasty to weld, plus, you were sayin the other one was maybe ten years old.

I think I bought this a year before the 140 came out, but you will really like the 140.

Anyway, heres my set up:)

I just bought a Lincoln 140 a few weeks ago. I couldn't be happier with it. It was brand new and I only paid $380 + $40 for shipping.
