: Horsepower Goals?
Jp-15 Jan 27th, 05, 10:38 PM Hi guys,
I was wondering, what it would take (in horsepower numbers) to achieve a low 12 second slip? As of now I've got a 3000 stall, TH350 with shift kit, and a 4.11 rearend gear with pro series posi unit. 26x10.5x15 slicks.
Thanks,
Joe Phillips
Dragn70 Jan 27th, 05, 11:13 PM What does the car weigh? My dad's car is making about 330 to the rear wheels using the math formulas, it runs mid 12's and weighs about 3200 with me in it. My car runs 12.20's and weighs about 3350 with me in it. I think the math formula using weigh and e.t. said it was around 350 to the rear wheels.
Jp-15 Jan 27th, 05, 11:30 PM The car weighs 3300 lbs with me in it. About what horsepower would that be at the crank D70?
Thanks again,
Joe Phillips
Dragn70 Jan 27th, 05, 11:45 PM I would (guess) 400 to 425. I run electric fans and water pump drives on both cars. The pump drive and electric fan cut .15 off the E.T., I was running a Flexilight flex fan, they are a major drain.

Joe Phillips You need an honest 300-325 HP at the flywheel to run about 102 in a 3300lb car.
The et is up to you but if hooked that could put you easily into the 12's
Most of the calculators online are using a formula that calculates engine HP, not flywheel HP regardless of what they are saying ;)
Doug F. Jan 28th, 05, 7:50 AM At that weight to run a 12.1 I'd say an honest 400 Flywheel HP with that gear and a decent converter with a 1.65-1.70 sixty.
In a stock eliminator style car less, but they have 4.88 gears, 5000 converter, etc.
mr 4 speed Jan 28th, 05, 8:13 AM A mild 454 with 9 to 1 compression and small solid cam would get you there.

I agree with Doug, about 400HP in the car under the conditions the prevail at the time is capable of very low 12's but I don't do et's when it comes to HP, too many variables.
A well set up car will follow the MPH pretty good but the MPH doesn't vary much between a good & bad run assuming you run it all the way through.
You can run 13.0's at say 110-112 or 12.0's at 110-112 & the HP comes out about the same within reason ,,, the et's are up to you & your setup ;)
Jp-15 Jan 28th, 05, 11:12 PM So do you guys think the zz383 with 425 hp and 460 ft lbs of torque will get me into the low 12's with an open exhaust and the 26 inch slicks? Assuming that the car will hook?
Thanks,
Joe Phillips
Dragn70 Jan 29th, 05, 9:17 AM If the numbers are real and your set up is right, it should do it.
onovakind67 Jan 29th, 05, 9:43 AM My 3475# Nova ran 12.1 @ 112 with a 383 similar to the ZZ383. We used a set of 1-5/8" headers with 2-1/2" collectors and a full 2-1/2" exhaust.
Make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot with a cheap converter.
