Hi,
I am replacing my instrument bezel and I cannot get the ignition switch off of the bezel. There is a retaining nut that goes against the bezel but it will not screw off past the part that the key inserts into. Someone else must have also encountered this problem. Thanks for the help.

Turn the key to the lock position.
On the front of the part that the key inserts into is a small hole.
Stick the end of a paper clip in the hole and pull the lock cylinder out.

The lock cylinder MUST be removed first
I'm not sure about a 64 but this is how it goes in a 65:
-Remove the lock cylinder by placing in the OFF position
-With the cyl. in the OFF pos. insert a small wire in the hole in the cyl. face
-While pushing in on the wire continue to turn the cyl. counterclockwise
-Pull the cyl. from the case
-Remove the chrome nut fully

Actually, I think you need to turn the lock cylinder to ACCESSORY which is to the left of OFF before you insert the paper clip.

Here's a related question. Mounting a new ignition switch, and the gizmo that threads on the shaft of the switch will not hold the threads, resulting in exposed threads out the front of the dash after the nut in installed. Is there a standard part that is not a stamped metal piece (eg a real nut) available to use there? Obviously not a standard hardware item. Also, the switch installs so the teeth of the key are up, or is the cylinder upside down? Teeth up seems so Mopar!

New switch is wrong. Not for 64 chevelle. Been there. The GM part # for the correct switch is 1116656.

Your probably right Rich. I haven't done this lately so I took the directions right out of the Chilton's manual (65-72). Now that you mentioned it I do remember that the directions were not 100%. I will need to do it soon though, so thanx for saving me alot of headaches and #^$%@$.

I was afraid of that! Sometimes you just can't trust the catalogs.
