: What pressure do you run your slicks at? (Results)
Troy70SS Sep 22nd, 04, 4:57 PM I just mounted my M/T ET Drags and have about 15 psi in them. I'm going to try to get to the track for the first time this season this Saturday. What do you think I should run in these things?
Thanks,
Troy.
BLK64SS Sep 22nd, 04, 5:44 PM For MY car ...... when I ran 28.5 x 10.5's they liked 10.25 psi best, with my 14 x 32's they like 8.5 psi.
i always run the most psi i can get away with. on my 28x9's i ran about 16psi with the 454. heavier cars typically can run more pressure, lighter cars usually need less. my car weighed 3920lbs and 16psi was good for high 1.50 60ft times.
fatrat70 Sep 22nd, 04, 6:15 PM 15.5-16 depending on track conditions. 29x10.5 on 10" rim. Hope your not going to Lakeland on Sat. and your going to Bradenton, Lakeland scares me I have been sideways there way too many times. If you ever head to Sunshine on a Fri. send me an email and I'll try to meet you out there.
Pat Kelley Sep 22nd, 04, 6:20 PM I was using 11 but am now trying 12 psi. 28x9-15 Hooisers. 3400 lbs at the starting line. As said, heaver cars need more than light cars.
kjett Sep 22nd, 04, 9:55 PM 14.5-15lbs here. I'm running a 10" tire on an 8" rim, so a little less pressure to get more of a footprint. I wish I could find a 9" wheel I liked. I may end up sending my Draglites off to be modified.
DragRacer Sep 22nd, 04, 10:26 PM 13-14 psi in 28 x 10.5 ET Drags on an 8.5" Centerline wheel. This is on a 3600 lb SBC car.
Bob West Sep 22nd, 04, 11:24 PM 19 psi in 28x10.5x15 on 8" draglites, 16psi 275/60/15 drag radials, same wheels.
Wooderson Sep 23rd, 04, 12:50 AM 13.5 psi on M/T ET drag 28.5 x 9 with a GM 8" steel wheel.
505Nova Sep 23rd, 04, 10:08 AM Go spin the tires in your driveway and take a look at the patch it lays down. If it's two strips from the outside of the tire, add air. If it appears to be only in the middle, remove some. You're looking for a full patch from the tire - that will get you in the ballpark for when you get to the strip. Then start making small .25 to .5 lb adjustments and see if the car picks up or slows in the 60' times.
Harold Sutton Sep 26th, 04, 3:37 PM Good advise, 505Nova. Thats the best way to get there.
godsend Sep 26th, 04, 3:54 PM I tried 505 novas tips years ago.
Cant get it too hook on non prepared streets that way, neither strips with grip problem at starting line.
If you run so high pressures so youll get the widest mark. Then the tire is full round. Full round means less tire to the ground when launching. If youll start spinning it never stops.
If it hooks it hooks all way.
Running 5.5 psi in my 3100lbs car using 17" wide 33" slicks. (m/t)
So i need alot less pressure to get it to hook away. but if i loose grip im lost.
Troy70SS Sep 27th, 04, 3:25 PM OK - Guys - Thanks for all the info. I tried 12.5 first - thew car wanted to go right. I tried 15 and it seemed to work good. I got a dead hook and the best 60' time ever. 1.82. I was getting 1.97 to 2.01 with my street tires.
Pat I went to Bradenton. It was pretty empty and I got to make 5 runs before 1pm. I had to leave at that point because it looked like the weather was deteriorating.
I was happy with the way the car hooked but not with the way it ran. It ran equal to my best time with the old hydraulic CAM (Performer RPM) and street tires on my first run. I expected more. I jetted up to see if I could get more out of it after the second pass. It got worse. I have two big issues that I can figure but want to hear more ideas.
First, I think with the addition of the better LunatiDyne solid (276/284)CAM I should have made more power. It is either the heads or the carb or both limiting my power making ability. Probably the heads more than the carb. I didn't go to the bigger valves when I had the 781's done.
Secondly, I should have been able to get more out of the 60'. I was not spinning, it launched straight and never moved around or shook. My theory - converter is a POS. I need a good 10" 3500 stall to get this number down.
Let me hear your questions and thoughts.

mc71454 Sep 27th, 04, 3:49 PM 20 lbs in Hoosier QT Pro. If you have a 4000 pound ride and all the weight goes onto the rear tires consider 18 to 20 pounds.
Troy70SS Sep 27th, 04, 4:23 PM Tom - read the post right above yours and give me your comments. I have to sort out these other issues. I was really expecting low 12's and 12.74 was all I could get. I think I should have done better with the solid CAM.

neat Sep 27th, 04, 9:36 PM 14 cold and 16 after the burnout worked best for me. 1.5XX sixties with one front tire up. 26.5 x 10.5 ET streets on a 16 inch wheel.
mc71454 Sep 28th, 04, 11:37 AM Troy,
Do you mean the performance part or the tire part.
I did some very careful testing for tire pressure a few years back going from 14 to 22+ pounds at a track rental day and found 20 pounds to be the best 60 ft. It may be because my car is so heavy and the tire needs more support especially in the sidewall.
Motor Martyr Sep 28th, 04, 1:00 PM QTP are stiff sidewall tires to begin with, since they're a DOT tire, this might have something to do with it.
Much like the radial slicks needing alot of air (reletively speaking).
Troy70SS Sep 28th, 04, 1:45 PM Tom - I meant the perfromance part. I started another thread to get some ideas regarding that issue. have a look at it and let me have your ideas.
Thanks,
Troy.
