I have a 71 Chevelle that had a standard transmission and now has an automatic turbo 400. I need to know what color the wires are under the dash for the reverse lights. I want to be able to mechanically turn the switch on by turning the column. What are the purple and the purple/black wire for? They are tied together so I was guessing that they were some kind of neutral safty switch.
Thanks for your help,

Yes the fat purple wires are the neutral safety switch wires.

Scott,
The backup light wires should still be hooked up to the switch on the lower part of the column. There was a backdrive linkage attached to the transmission linkage and to the steering column that would activate the backup light switch. Unless the wires are connected to the new shifter (B&M?) or the original style horseshoe, it should be workable now. My car is the same way, but I am converting back to the 4-speed. You wouldn't happen to have the clutch pedal nuetral switch?
