: CORRECT, 70 SS 396 top alt. bracket?

I'm doing a complete restore on a 70 SS Chevelle 396. Looking at my assembly manual, it looks like there are 3 small holes( 1 for heater hose bracket, 1 for alt. wire clip, and 1 for the battery ground) and it also shows the bigger round adjusting hole. The manual shows it being for series 13000 V-8 (EXC 13857-67) I don't know if these #s are for big block or small block. My "Restoration Guide" by Paul Herd, says the same brackets were used from 69-72. A friend of mine says he is pretty sure 69 did not have the battery grnd. hole or the adjusting hole(He mainly does Cameros, if that makes any difference) The aftermarket ones I have seen with 3 holes and the adjusting hole are for small blocks and everything I have found for the big block only have 2 small holes. Can anyone tell me what is the correct one for my car? The car was built in June of 70 if that matters. Does anyone have one, or know where I can get the right one? Thank You, Lonny

Here's a picture of a 70 bracket, 3 small holes and one round hole. I forgot to add the picture:clonk:

I wish I did. I don't know if anyone repops them or who would carry it. Maybe one of the other guys will chime in.

Hopefully somebody knows. I've checked about 8 catalogs and every body shows this style for small blocks and only a 2 hole style for big blocks. Thanks again

I'm no expert on 70's, but you might want to check out this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevrolet-396-454-Alternator-Bracket_W0QQitemZ200253914601QQcmdZViewItem?hash=i tem200253914601&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245) on Ebay. Good luck.

A good number of the battery Grounds were also grounded on the engine Head as appossed to the Alt bracket depending on which cable was specified. Depending on the aftermarket cables you get, there may not be enough length to be properly route the cables when attaching to the Alt bracket. I prefer the Head location, but it's a matter of preferance as both would likely be considered correct until you cross referance the buildsheet for proof.

If your buildsheet battery Cable specifies FV then it attaches to the cylinder head. If you have a PE code cable it was attached to the upper alternator bracket.

Just something to remember if your not happy with how the cable routes when you try to attach to the Alt. bracket.

John -

My broadcast sheet has a negative cable code of YG for my late December Baltimore built 1970 L34/TH400 and the cable attaches to the head. Perhaps it's a case of different assembly plants using different codes for the exact same item as we have seen in other instances.

After much research, the brackets are the same for 1970 no matter where your cable goes. We found brackets that have the three smaller holes, some have the imprint of the star washer that goes under the cable, and have threads in that hole. Some have no threads or washer impressions. The round hole is correct for 1970-in to early production 1973. After that, the bracket has the longer slot type hole.

The battery cable codes John is referring to only apply to T-60 heavy duty sidepost cables along with the new R-79W sidepost battery. Most 396 engines unless special ordered or have A/C would use the YG top post style with an R-59 battery. Hopefully this clears up any confusion regarding buildsheet codes.

Thanks for the explanation/clarification.
