: Starting tire pressure for M/T ET Streets?

I just ordered a pair of 28-11.5-15 M/T ET Streets. Anybody want to throw out a good starting tire pressure to try at the track? Mounted on 15x8 rims on my Chevelle. I had to go as low as 11 psi on my Hoosier QT DOT's to get them to hook.

Thanks!

Start at 20lbs and go down 1 lb at a time until your 60' times fall off. Then go the other direction in either .25 lb or .5 lb increments.

Ken,....20 psi, wow higher than I thought. Glad I asked.

Tom,
No, 11 psi on the Hoosier QT DOT, not the Pro. I don't know why though. 12 psi and on up to 16 psi and I would blow them off 1st and 2nd gear at the track. :( And it's not like my motor is overpowering like you guys. Maybe they were just not good with a stick?? They were a short tire also. 275-50-15 (about 25.8" tall)

New tires should be at my house by Friday. If this friggin rain ever ends, I'll be at the track this weekend to try em out.

How much does your car weigh?
It seems to me from people on the site, the heavier the car, the more PSI. So far, of my limited (compared to others on the site), when I set the pressure to 18psi cold in a 26*10.5 ET street, I get my best 60's, which are low 1.8x's, this being without me flooring it off the line. This usually equates to about 20psi at the end of the run. The car feels less nutty with higher PSI anyway.. I just might be a chicken though :D I ran a set of M&H racemasters that were very used at like 14PSI and was not impressed with the feeling..
I personally would be scared to run 11psi down the track @ 100+ mph.
I think ken is right with start at 20 and go down, maybe 22 even.. I always set mine cold for the 1st run, then stop just after the timeslip booth on the side and see how much PSI I built up during the run, then go from there.

jmho..

28x12.5x15 with the best traction coming from 12psi.

Marv,
I never weighed it, but it is stock and not cut up so I am figuring 3800# at least like the other BBC 70's I see out there.

Hmmmm,...looks like I need to invest in a little 12volt powered portable air compressor to take to the track with me.

Thanks guys,
Jim

I found the best traction/ET with 12-13 PSI in my E/T Streets.

Jim, the bottom line is you want to run as much psi as traction will allow. When I was running ET streets I typically ran 14-15psi depending on track conditions. Any higher and it would'nt hook as well but that may have something to do with running a 10" tread tire on an 8" rim. Since your tread is only 9" you should be able to run more psi without causing the tire to bow in the middle like mine.

Also, if the track is hot and greasy my car does better with less psi. On my outing last week I had to drop the tires (now ET Drags) to 13.5 and still could only manage a spinning 1.51 where as last January it ran a 1.46 60' with 16psi. 16psi last week netted me a 1.64. I was'nt comfortable going any lower than 13.5 because the car tends to drift too much at the top end.
