: Tire growth: How much?

I've heard about tire growth with bias ply tires (drag type tires) and was wondering how much growth there is.

I have a set of 28x12.5 ET Streets and was wondering how much growth there was. I figure its probably dependent on speed. How much would there be at lets say hiway speeds (60 or 70 mph)?
What about 120 mph?

In the future I'm considering going to a 29x11.5 Hoosier QTP, would the growth be the same with them?

Thanks in advance. smile.gif

Most smaller tires seem to grow about 3% from what I've heard, while larger tires (32x16 or so) can grow 10% or more.

Q: How much will a Mickey Thompson drag slick grow?
A: Over all diameter will affect the amount of growth that you will have. There are many variables that contribute to tire growth as well. Unless otherwise noted, Mickey Thompson drag slicks are considered a low growth tire. Mickey Thompson slicks will grow approximately 1" to 1 ½" @ 150mph (Note: Radial slicks do not grow).
Please phone us and we can help you in determining tire growth for your specific application.)

Would this be the same for the DOT Drag tires(ET Streets / Hoosier QTP)?

We had a 10.5 x 29.5 M/T E.T.Drag on a 8" wide wheel and it seemed to grow (got into the wheel well in the front with about 1/2" of static clearance) but the new 10.5W x 28" M/T E.T. Drags on a 10" wide wheel don't seem to grow at all. The larger diameter tires seem to grow a lot.

We always used the 3% figure as provided by M/T. We have much less than 10% room on more than one car with 33" tires and they never touch at 160+ mph.

Is that 3% figure for drag slicks?

Would it be the same for a DOT drag-type tire (like a ET Street or QTP)?

Thanks. smile.gif

Do you have an aversion to contacting a tire manufacturer? I'll bet you won't find anyone who knows more about these tires than the folks that make them.

Everything I have ever heard is 3% for slicks. Street tires grow slightly less, and radials almost zero growth.

How much room have you got? A "finger?"

It depends on the tire and also the rim width. We went from a 11x33 to a 12x33 using the same 10in rims. I bet the 12in tire grew a good 10% more than the 11in tire. These were dragster tires with a very soft sidewall. Every doorslammer we had used a rim the same width as the tire. You really couldn't see any growth but I bet the 3% was pretty close.
