: 67 side trim
Marv D Sep 15th, 08, 4:04 PM OK stupid question or a stupid move??
I have all the original side trim from 'a' 67 Camino. The short pieces are just flat TOO LONG to fit between the edge of the fender and the wheelhouse trim. The wheelhouse trim is aftermarket. Was the 67's with side trim delivered without wheelhouse trim????????? Even then the front short pieces would be kinda long, but work better.
Guess I'm whacking the end off at a 45 to 'make' them fit????
Marv D Sep 16th, 08, 3:00 PM Hmmmmm lack of replies tells me no one has side trim and wheelhouse trim on the same car,, because it wasn't susposed to be that way! Problem is I have holes in the doors and quarters for the trim, no options now with paint complete. And had holes in the inner lip of the front fenders for wheelhouse tri, but no holes for the side trim. So in my brilliance I put the wheelhouse trim all the way around, then started with the side trim.
I guess I'm whacking the ends off the side trim and tapping it down to make it fit.
New issue poped up last night,, the car is basicaly together less interior and wireing. No WAY can you reach in behind the inner fender where the side trim bolts on to the front fender. Man I hate the thoughts of double sticky tape,, but not sure what options I have!
How did I get myself into this mess!!!

Marv D Sep 16th, 08, 11:47 PM Just in case anyone should ever want to know,,, the trim is not intended for Camino's with wheelhouse trim. I cut it down 3/8" and tapered the leading edge,, looks just fine.
The 'fun' part. To install the trim you have to drop the inner fender well, it's the onl;y way to gain access to the back where the trim stude stick through. But, that ain't enough. The fender is so close to the cowl and body that you still can't access the rear trim stud. Soooooo, you have to loosen the bottom bolt on the fender to gain that extra 1/4" so you can slip you hand back far enough to put the speed nuts on the studs. Then a gear wrench is sure the ticket to snug the nuts up.
I figured I hadn't cut any corners and done anything 1/2@$$ed so far, why start now. One side done, on to the passengers sid3e tomorrow night.
Cam Sep 17th, 08, 12:24 AM My '67 Malibu has the stock side trim. I have seen the side trim combined with the wheel opening moldings on 67s, so others have dealt with the issue before. 1967 Impalas had a similar style of anodized side trim as the Malibu; I have seen occasions where people have added the wheel opening moldings to those, too.
Chevrolet started putting side moldings on with adhesive starting in the 1970s, saying that the lack of holes meant one less place for rust to start. Maybe, but it is cheaper and it saves one from a lot of the unbolting and prying that is not for the faint of heart.
Doug628 Sep 22nd, 08, 3:07 PM I really like the look but am now glad that I didn't go with it. It sounds like a lot of trouble. I just put on the SS rocker panel trim and it looks OK. I'm still thinking about going with the fender well trim but haven't decided.
Well at least you did prewarn others if they are planning on doing the same thing and probably saved them from a major headache.
No matter what I still like the look!
Aaron67 Sep 23rd, 08, 2:16 AM I have a 67 elco also. I am still doing the body work, and also noticed my front fenders (original) have the holes for the wheel trim, but not on the rear quarters. My car only had the side trim. Very interesting that the holes are there.
By the way, do the wheel well trim fit good? May I ask where you got it?
Thanks!
Marv D Sep 23rd, 08, 8:44 AM I ordered mine from OPG. Fit is 'OK' I guess. It's soft enough that a bump with the palm of your hand makes it 'fit' . Pretty soft stuff. If you have the side trim, you have 8 pieces of GOLD tight there! REALLY hard to find and if your car has the side trim holes, your really stuck unless your a good body man.
cuisinartvette Sep 23rd, 08, 11:42 AM Mine also had the holes for both but filled the side trim pieces in.
Dotn know if Ill use wheel well trim or not.
Looking sharp Marv
