: hard shifting muncie when warm
frankgv Sep 14th, 08, 11:30 PM hello all, this is a 64 muncie 4 speed. the transm. was removed to replace the clutch with a centerforce 1. the main shaft of the muncie was leaking and we "plugged it with a freeze plug , no more leaking(for now). Also installed a Howe hydraulic throw out bearing and fabricated a mount for the master cylinder off the bell housing. When everything is cold the shifting is effortless !! however after about 20 min of city driving and getting warm. no overheating at all. it becomes more difficult to shift, no grinding, just very hard to impossible to shift in to gear. I can shut off the engine and push lever in gear, start the car let up on the clutch and move the car. after some cooling it will shift again.
. THe hurst shifter is getting a little worn but the 2 major changes are the "plug" in the front of the muncie case that bolts to the engine and the hydraulic clutch set up. PLease , if anyone has suggestions let me know, Thanks very much, Frank.

Frank...I would look into the clutch not releasing all the way when it gets warm. Is there any adjustment on the release arm?

I must agree 100%!!!
My question to begin with, why replace a perfectly good clutch linkage with a hyd clutch? The factory clutch linkage/setups are VERY good, and if there is a problem with the way one is working, then it is likely that something in the linkage has broken or has become excessively worn. If that is (or was) the problem, I'd inspect the factory linkage and make appropriate repairs. From my viewpoint and experience, hyd clutches just don't provide the adjustment that a mechanical linkage has.
frankgv Sep 15th, 08, 9:55 AM Thanks, the reason for the hyd assist was for my wife to use it. the mech set up was ok but with this hyd assist i can push the pedal with my fingers. i am getting the full stroke on the master cylinder to release the hydr throw out. maybe when it gets hot the hyd fluid "boils" and foams. you don't think by "plugging " the main shaft on the trans. has anything to do with this?
Thanks, Frank.
larietrope Sep 15th, 08, 3:08 PM This won't help any but if you ever decide to "redo" the clutch set up I recommend a genuine GM total package clutch set up. After finishing my 454 I pondered all the name brands but went with full GM from new flywheel back. Completely happy. Easy leg pressure, great release, and smooth engagement.

I agree, clutch adjustment. Not enough release when unit comes to operating temp.

At this time while engine's running can you return in neutral easily ?
If not, like other members said, check clutch setup.
If there is no hard point to shift from first to neutral then you should drain your transmission and refill it with new oil.
As your trans was leaking did you check level or add another kind of oil than the one wich was already in ?
Laurent.
frankgv Sep 16th, 08, 3:19 PM Thanks everyone, I am going to check ALL your recommendations. As I am under the weather this last week or so, it maybe some time before I'll get to it all. With the colder weather coming here soon,(remote) winter storage is next with limited opportunities to get "under" there. When I find out more I'll let know what I found, Thanks again. Frank.
