Not sure if I'm posting this in the right section but here goes. I've owned a '70 Chevelle SS with the M-21 tranny since Dec. of 2007. I can't get the reverse lights to work. There's no power to the light sockets. The car has headers on it and I suspect it has something to do with the linkages. I'm not to familiar with how the light's are activated on these cars and this is driving me crazy. Everything else on the car works. Also can anyone tell me how the neutral safety switch is hooked up on the '70. Any information would be greatly appreciated

The reverse lockout linkage has probably been removed. Look at your steering column, just above where the intermediate shaft connects to it. There is a collar there with a tab that sticks out. The linkage comes up into that tab and rotates the collar when you put the trans in reverse. Grab the collar around the steering column inside the car, below the ignition switch, and rotate it. If the linkage has been removed you can rotate it by hand and the backup lights will go on. Also, if you can remove your key in other than reverse it's most likely disconnected. The linkage doesn't fit well with headers.

Thanks for the info Hank. Went out to the garage to check. I can remove the key in any gear, but I think that have more to do with the fact its the original key and all worn out and I can turn the column just a bit by hand. I looked under the hood and the rod is still connected to the sterring column and it moves when I put the car in reverse. I'm wondering if the switch the rod moves has gone bad. Not sure what its called. Thanks for the help. greatly appreciated

The switch for the lights is in the column. As you said it may not be moving enough due to sloppy linkage or the switch is worn out.
