First off.."I WILL NEVER FORGET" My wife is a school teacher in a town that is pretty much military folks. Yesterday when time to stand for the pledge of allegience, a few of the military kids refused to stand..they were 7-8 years old at time of 9/11. And alot of the kids have lost their fathers in this war. or been deployed to Iraq to what seems to be forever to these kids ands families..I am ex-miliatary, served in Pursian Gulf and now a civilian and I say "Thank you too our troops and all the hurting families for their sacrifices............................" SALUTE

Parents don't teach their kids about what matters. It seems they let the schools do all the teaching and we all know where that leads.
I served my country for 26 years and I teach my kids every chance I get about what this country stands for, how it was formed and the sacrifices made to become what we are. Sometimes they get tired of hearing me preach but every once and in a while I hear them repeat something I taught them.
Stand up for what you believe in!

Yesterday morning, I put the American Flag up in front of my house. I had my oldest daughter (5 years old) lead us (me and my 4-year old) in the Pledge of Alligence in front of our house... I didn't see any one else around, but one of my neighbors mentioned it in the afternoon (he saw/heard it and thought it was nice how I had the kids do that). He was the only other neighbor with a flag up yesterday, but his flag is always up...
My eldest is in 1st grade, and she was told by her teacher to wear "Red White & Blue", but I wasn't sure if she was explained the complete significance of the day (her teacher was sick yesterday, so not sure what the substitute taught them)...
I tried to explain it to her, but at under 6-years old, kind of hard telling her how these bad guys did some really bad stuff to America... Didn't want to give her nightmares...
She also pointed out an "Obama '08" sign in someones yard on the way to school, and mentioned thats the same name as the guy on TV... So I had to try and explain he was trying for President of America against another guy (had to keep the "third" parties out to simplify things for her). She said, "John McCain?" and I said yes... Proud of what she picks up overhearing my wife and I talk about, or watch on TV...
I then told her that "Mommy and I" think McCain is a better choice...

[B]So I had to try and explain he was trying for President of America against another guy (had to keep the "third" parties out to simplify things for her).
Too bad leaving out 3rd parties to simplify American politics also seems necessary with many GROWN UPS who are probably not that much more politically aware than your 6 year old  ..
The Pledge of Allegiance is in reference to OUR country..Not towards ONE President, one party, or one war being fought. It's on the whole, and should be taught and respected as such, IMHO. As a matter of fact, the pledge should be proudly recited by those who disagree... the whole crux of it, IMHO, are the words "and to the Republic for which it stands".

Last Night on Fox McCain said on September 11th, 2001 we weren't Republicans or Democrats - we were Americans. Best way to look at it. It was my 10 year old twins that reminded me to fly the flag yesterday.
