I scattered the Saginaw 4 speed out of my 72 Chevelle all over the road yesterday . I've got an AX15 5 speed tranny out of a '97 2wd Cherokee. It was left over from a 4wd conversion I did a few years ago. I can get an adapter from Novak that allows me to retain my stock bellhousing and clutch set up for $299. It's not much bigger than the 4 speed so fitment shouldn't be too bad. I believe the tranny is rated somewhere around 300ft/lb of torque. I know the Jeep guys can put a mild small block in front of this tranny and make it live as long as they do not beat on it too bad. Anybody else tried this yet? Seams to me like a cheap way to get into an overdrive tranny, and my cheapest route to get my car back on the road.

Seems like a reasonable proposition but like you said probably not gonna last long if you don't take it easy on it.

There are no CHEAP mass produced 450+ t 5-speeds out there world-wide except for the Tremacs and the Richmond that we can use, right?

The AX15s arent very strong. Ive seen alot of Jeeps bust those things with no problems.

Sell the Jeep trans to a Jeep guy, and scrounge up a Super T-10. They can usually be had cheaper than a Muncie. I got $400 for the last AX-15 I sold. I swapped a used long shaft BOP th400 and $75 for the Super T-10 with 2.88 1st gear.

Look for one of the chrysler 833 OD units used in GM trucks. Heavy duty, a 4 speed OD trans that will bolt to a GM bell housing with no adapter.
Nice strong unit, not real costly.
