Ive got 2 comp + shifters. #1 we figured its from a 67 gto. the second I have no idea but has a slight dogleg and the handle is welded to the housing. Im missing the levers and such for the 2nd shifter. but the slight dogleg, might put it more centered than the gto shifter. Can I just switch the levers and rods over?
I know you can get the correct shifter and install kit, but Ive already got these two sitting here, I may just use the pontiac shifter in the elcamino, but I would be good to know if you can swap shifter bodies around. thanks jim

Jim the linkage on the GTO shifter should work just fine. It is made by Hurst for GM and I believe the body is the same as the Comp Plus. The install kit is specific to the trans, in this case your Muncie. If in doubt just mock it up on the trans you have.

Nope, nothing wrong with adding a little class to our Chevys :)

The OEM GM Hurst is not the same as the aftermarket competition plus Hurst.

The aftermarket competition plus Hurst is a better unit and has stop bolts to reduce damage from hard shifting.

GM used their own installation kit (rods, arms, mt. plate) and it was not as good as the aftermarket Hurst parts

When I rebuilt Muncies back in the 70s, the Chevy dealer was out of main bearings. He called over to the Ponitac dealer (across the street) and they had them. They were a couple of bucks cheaper so I checked some other prices. I ended up going there first as they were cheaper across the board. Same part number but different price.

Hurst used to have a complete list of the oem applications of all of their shifters on their website. if nothing else, google the number stamped into the shifter to find out if you're holding onto a rare COPO shifter or something before cobbling something together- it might all go together and work, but if you've got the shifter that some Corvette owner needs to get his car up and running, then you could sell it and buy a brand new shifter.

Actually the guy who wrote one of the most popular factory hurst decode books out there is a a very active member on the PY Pontiac sister site to this one. Do a search and you will find him. He know what both of my shifters were.

Jim,

Here is a link to help identify what you have.

They also used to have an exploded diagram for the comp plus but I can't find it now. New ownership I think. I will e-mail that pdf to you if you need it.
