: Need help with wheel size on my 66
1966BB4spdChevelle Sep 11th, 08, 12:13 PM Here is what I have. 66 with a Moser 9" rear end, with 1" lower coil's. I'd like to run the widest wheel and tire combo I can with out doing any triming on the 1/4's. Any info would be great. Pictures would be awsome.
Dave427 Sep 11th, 08, 12:37 PM 15X8
4.5 Backspacing
275/60-15 will be close, since its lower. A 255/60-15 will fit for sure.
Dave
CDN SS Sep 11th, 08, 1:00 PM Assuming the new rear is same width as the stock one and shock mount is no closer to wheel than stock ..... 15 x9 with 5" BS & 28x 10.5 slicks is the largest I can get in my 66 with no trimming .the shock mount is the limiter here and sidewall bulge to stock inner fender well also cant run my stock location 3" tailepipes with the slicks ......street 15 x 8 - 4.5 and 275 / 60 works fine at stock ride height yes pbly close if car lower
animal69 Sep 11th, 08, 5:03 PM Seeing as we don't know the width of your housing and the fact that it is not stock, you're going to have to get under the car and do some measuring for yourself.
1966BB4spdChevelle Sep 11th, 08, 5:05 PM Thanks for the replys guy's. Do you think 15" X 8.5" with 5" BS would be pushing it with 275/60-15 ???
I had a set of Chrome 15" X 8 Rallys with 4 1/2" BS and 245/60-15 and they had alot of room. But that was before the new coils and the 9" Moser. I don't have the body back on the frame right now. I'm getting ready to order new wheels but I just want to make sure I don't go over board with the 15" X 8.5's with 5" BS....
Also I guess I need to check to see what my Moser 9" measures. Because if I remember correct they addvertise the housing as 64-72 chevelle set up. Anyone know what it should be for a 66 ???? I was thinking it was 1" narrower then 68-72 but I don't remember for sure????

OK:thumbsup: I will measure it tonight and let everyone know.
Thanks.......:beers:
1966BB4spdChevelle Sep 12th, 08, 12:03 AM Ok here are the measurements from housing end to housing end, about 54 1/2"- 54 3/4" depending on what eyeball i'm looking out of.
madmax66 Sep 12th, 08, 9:58 AM I have a stock 66 Rearend and my Coils springs in the rear are suppose to be stock and I am running:
18x8 Front 4.5 Back space 245 x 40
18x9.5 Rear 5.25 Back Space 275 x 40
Pictures are in my signature. I have lowered the front 1.5" since the pictures were taken.
davewho1 Sep 13th, 08, 12:37 AM I just installed 275/60/15's on my 4" BS 15x8 Rallys yesterday - stock '66 diff. Road tested it today - drove in a couple different driveways, etc and no tire rub is apparent, so far. It is tight, though.
Whew, I was sweating it there for a while. :D

I would say you have a 64-67 width rear end. I use 54 1/4" backing plate to backing plate or 54 1/2" going around the cover for early housings........It might be safer if you get the seven digit casting number and use the web site below. If it was me I'd try 15X8's with 4 1/2" bs to fit fatter tires on a 66-67 with a stock width rear end......

It's a FORD 9" rearend that's 54 1/2" wide so that won't help at all.
Mr Chevelle Sep 13th, 08, 8:32 PM Sorry, I should have reread your first post.........early housings are 60" axle flange to flange not including a drum or rotor if that helps.
The chevellestuff web site has some axle measurements towards the bottom. I don't agree with all but might help...............
66SSFan Sep 13th, 08, 8:38 PM I have a stock 66 Rearend and my Coils springs in the rear are suppose to be stock and I am running:
18x8 Front 4.5 Back space 245 x 40
18x9.5 Rear 5.25 Back Space 275 x 40

Exact same set up I'm running with the factory length 12 bolt and it rides/fits great.
1966BB4spdChevelle Sep 13th, 08, 10:38 PM Thanks for all the help guys. I ordered the new wheels today. I'm going with Centerline Warriors 15 X 8.5 with a 5" BS on the rear and a 15 X 5.5 with 3 3/8" BS on the front. Not sure about the tire size yet.

Dave, when he gets to that size, he should really measure it. I tried the same combo you have on my 66 and it rubbed on one side. I got rims with a 4.5" BS and they are fine.
1966BB4spdChevelle, you should take a rim and measure the backspace and bolt it onto the car and measure the space you have on each side of the rim before you buy a set.

Good advice...
15X8.5 with 5" BS "should" work pretty well, ASSUMING the rearend is the same as stock width...
I ran 15X8.0 with about 5", and fit a 295 under my '66 (untrimmed), with a bit more room on the outside...

Well I hope so because they are on order, for some reason one 15 X8.5 is on back order and one 15X5.5 for the front is on back order. I"m getting the through Jegs.....The two should be here by the end of the week....
