: Full length & Short BB Headers
feedphillipnow Dec 29th, 04, 4:13 PM Someone said they thought I would have scraping or clearence problems with full length headers. The front has 2" drop coils on it so it sits a little lower. Id hate to order some and have problems! What do you guys think? Also, what are your guys thoughts on shorty -vs- full lengths? I was ordering more parts today so I thought id get a final opinion :D
onovakind67 Dec 29th, 04, 4:21 PM How about stock manifolds?

Full length headers make more power but shorty's are easier to fit and help to avoid scraping the pavement.Maybe someone who runs a BB with a dropped F/E will recommend a full length header.
Bob West Dec 29th, 04, 8:04 PM I like my dynomax coated headers, but still have to watch the speed bumps, had Hooker comps on there for a while, had the bottom tubes on the drivers side smashed pretty good. I think Heddman makes a pretty good header too that is tucked up close to the floor.
flywheel Dec 29th, 04, 9:19 PM I had full length Dynomax on my Elky with a BB. Iput Eibach lowering springs in it and the headers were less than a palms with from the ground.. Course the springs I found out later were for a SB. So I took them out an put some outhers in to raise it up a little more. I think with the CORRECT 2" lowering springs you MIGHT be ok...But I bet you'll still be close.
The bad thing tho about the shorty's is that you have to have a REAL tight bend on the pipe to go from the collector to the muffler... That really squeezes down the pipe at the bend. If it's a muffler shop bend.. Now, if you could find someone to manderal bend the pipe it might be better....

72ElCaminoSS Dec 30th, 04, 12:03 AM I got some "3/4 length" headers I'll be using. They're longer than the traditional shortys but still won't put the collector on the ground.
ricks_67 Dec 30th, 04, 6:38 AM I have Hooker super comps with 2" drop springs and all 4 of the bottom tubes are crushed to some extent, the drivers side collector flange is ground down to the bolt head. All the tubes hit right at the bend no where else till the collector flange. Believe me it's not fun driving the car trying to figure out if a bump is going to cause the car to bottom out. Whats worse is slamming on the brakes to slow down for a bump when other people just drive along and hoping no one rear ends you. You tend to watch cars in front of you to see how there cars react to bumps. I've crossed bridges that looked ok then when you come off there is the little dip and bam another scrape. When I have my motor out I'll be cutting off the bottom of the tubes where they are crushed and replacing that part of the tube plus I'm going to weld on another piece of tube to double the thickness in that area. At almost $600.00 for these headers I'm going to keep them on the car. I also bought a QA-1 front coil over shocks to help raise the car up. I'm from Pennsylvania and the truckers say Pa has the worst roads.
Whittaker Dec 30th, 04, 9:49 AM The drivers side on my headers are scraped pretty good. But I was on a back road pushing 100 when I hit a dip in the road and bottomed out. They are Headmens.
the walrus Dec 30th, 04, 10:51 AM I have also been looking and have not been able to find any shorty coated headers that will work with an auto on the column - not sure if that is your combo too. Maybe they exist and I just can't find them.
From what I've read on here the Hedmen Elites seem to get the best reviews for full length.
72ElCaminoSS; what brand are your 3/4 lenght? are they coated too?
Hi-po SS 454 Dec 30th, 04, 12:00 PM After the 454 was installed on my 71, with Hooker headers, and original 307 springs, there was bad scrapeing, when the BB springs where installed it solved my problem. In your case shorties may be the way to go.
Bobalos Dec 30th, 04, 12:03 PM Does anyone know of a "shortie" header for a BBC? I dont recall ever seeing one other than the Sanderson cast iron manifolds. I am looking for a 1 7/8 or 2" shortie.
I am looking for something like this
