: 1970 SS, "gloss" for dash; cluster and glove box

I have searched (both the "interior" forum and this forum), but didn't find a complete answer...

I am working on a "budget" project, trying to "restore" an SS dash panel to put in my Chevelle... My original interior is SDark Green, but I am changing to "Ivory/Pearl/White" (so dash will be Black)...

What degree of gloss are the different areas of the dash?

I am assuming the guage cluster/column were a different gloss than the glovebox area, correct?

Any suggestions for "spray can" colors? SEM or Krylon, etc...

This isn't a "correct" resto, just looking for something close (that looks good) and is relatively inexpensive (do it myself)...

I believe 60% Gloss is correct, and the Dash pad and dash itself, will appear slightly different as the two are made from different materials.

One vinyl, and one hard plastic.

Ensure you clean these areas well, as original dashs have been "Armour All'ed" to death over the years and Silicone residue will cause you a nightmare.

Ensure a good adhesion promotor like "Bulldog" is used as well as most paints don't adhere well to vinyls and plastics.

Fun stuff.

On the dash carrier I'd use SEM Sand Free, promotes adhesion, followed by SEM Landau Black and you'll be golden.

Use search and I think you will find many posts about this.

I dyed some armrests, rearview mirror cover, coat hooks and some seat hinge covers. 1st time I did it with Sand Free, but it starting flaking off when flexed. The second time I did it I used Bulldog--and it worked very well (it flexes nicely). Just my 2 cents!

BUT, are the guage surround (SS) and the glovebox area different degrees of gloss???

I am assuming the guage surround would be "flatter" than the glovebox area... But just an assumption...

And where could I find this "BullDog" stuff?

"Dash Carrier"? Would this be the entire plastic dash? Or the guage surround piece?

Thanks

The dash carrier is the entire molded assembly.

I'm making the assumption that your not going to compete on a Diamond certified nation Level, and even if you were, I doubt anybody is going to be able to tell if you have a 60% Gloss, or a 50% in a pre-mixed landau Black.

They'd nail you on all the reproduction parts long before they noticed that.

The main thing, especially with Colors, is to stay consistant. I believe 60% Gloss to be correct, and you'll see a variance between the dash carrier and Pad in some of the Colored interiors where the shade varied subtly, but on black, it's not going to make a noticable differance.

The main thing is to not take out of the box reproduction parts, and mate them with painted that are totally different shades. Colored or not, it's noticable.

Landau, 60% Gloss mix, Vinyl Paint from the Chevelle parts vendors, either way, keep it consistant and paint it all with the proper preperation and you'll be good to go.

Again I highly recommend "Bulldog" and it can be found and any local Autozone in the paint area. I also use "Prep-all" for the precleaner.

So I'll take that as the area surrounding the guages should be the same degree of gloss as the glovebox? So I could use "Landau Black" for everything on the dash carrier, and it should look okay???

You're correct, I'm NOT competeing for anything, not even going stock... Just don't want it to look too out-of-place, and then need to pull it out to repaint...

I was just ASSUMING that around the guages would be LOWER gloss (satin?) than the area near the glove box (semi-gloss?)... Thats all...
