: Richmond swap question
upstate dave Sep 9th, 08, 2:21 PM I recently swapped out a M21 - 3.73 setup for a Richmond 4+1 - 2.73 setup. My question is where can I find the calucator file to determine the tranny speedo gear necessary for my speedometer to read the correct mph. Currently it is about 15 mph slow. Thanks!
See if any of these help:

GuysMonteSS Sep 9th, 08, 2:48 PM Hey Dave,I would like to hear how you like the 4+1 with the 2.73's,what size tires,(dia.), and what rpm are you turning at highway speeds. Is yours the 3.27:1 first gear ?? I was thinking about switching from my current 3.00:1 to a 2.75:1,but havent yet.

Chicken Coupe Sep 9th, 08, 2:51 PM The Richmond swap...is your swap using one of the newer 5 spd OD's?
If so can you either direct me to any posts that review the install or could you start one?
BillK Sep 9th, 08, 7:33 PM Dave,
How did everthing fit ? I am getting ready to bring a block home this weekend to mock mine up. Curious what surprises are in store for me. What shifter did you use ? I have the Hurst.
By the way, you guys are wusses :) No less than 3.30 gears are going in mine. I might even keep the 3.73's for a while. Of course mine is one of them baby engines that likes to sing :)
GuysMonteSS Sep 9th, 08, 7:50 PM Hey Bill,if you run those 3.73's you'll be able to go rock climbing ...LOL

yellow heap Sep 9th, 08, 9:11 PM My richmond 5 came with a book,in it was all the info needed(G M part numbers also) and simple calc to get the speedo right.

Guy,
It will actually be a little tamer in first gear than the 5.13's I had in the Camaro drag car :) 5th gear will still be 1 to 1, no different than the muncie was. 3.73's are the perfect gear for a small block.
My actual long term plan is to go with about a 3.30, but the 3.73's are in there so they will stay for now.
upstate dave Sep 10th, 08, 1:23 AM Thanks everyone....
Mike, I will try those links tomorrow.
Guy, my tranny is the 3.27 1st gear. My tires are the 225x60x14 which I beleive are about 26" tall. 70 mph is about 2400 rpm. It is a nice tranny and I feel that I have lost nothing on the performance side.
Chicken Coupe, the tranny is the street 4+1 not a overdrive thus the 2.73 gears.
Bill, the tranny fit ok, just relocate the x member backwards about 2" or so. I am using the hurst shifter, it shifts without problems. However there is no gate or offset on reverse, so you have be careful when down shifting from 5th. Straight down is the big buzz or reverse. Being a 69 velle the shifter handle requires a center position if using the console. I went thru summit and pick up a handle with a 1.5" offset to the right. I believe my console will fit.
Yellow Heap, what book? ...I bought the tranny used off E-Bay.
snowtrav Sep 10th, 08, 7:15 AM Dave, How did the shifter end up front to back, did you have to change the stock position any? Thanks Alan

I have the Long shifter on mine and to shift into reverse, you have to push down on the stick. No problems coming out of 5th at all. I really like the Long shifter, haven't tried the Hurst one.

Chicken Coupe Sep 10th, 08, 9:17 AM Thanks for the info. I have just received one of the new 5 spd w/OD. Still sitting in the box until the motor is back from the shop.
I have a question regarding stick position.
In my case, I am trying to do any floor/hump modifications necessary to accommodate the Richmond install while the body is separate from the chassis.
My car was a factory 4 speed, no console and I will be installing buckets, but no console. Did you need to modify the tunnel for the Long Shifter stick position? If so, any insight, pics, measurements you could pass along?
Thanks in Advance

Chicken Coupe - Sorry, I do not know the specs on the Richmond over drive tranny or the Long Shifter so I can not answer your question.

There is no comparing a Hurst to a Long Machine shifter. The Long shifter is top shelf and one of the best for a Richmond.

Bill,
The Richmond and the 3.73:1 will be geared even lower than your 5.13:1 and Muncie combo. You have a great combo for an aluminum flywheel!
I like my Richmond 3.27:1 first with my 3.42:1 differential.

My car was a 3 on the tree before, so I added the hump. I mounted the hump where it worked with the shifter and had to notch the opening in the hump for the shifter (not just the stick, part of the shifter mechanism was touching the hump). Richmonds site shows the distance from the front of the trans to the shifter centerline of 20". That may help judge the difference.
