: To Mopar or not to Mopar, that is the ?
Whiskey Sep 9th, 08, 1:48 PM I was just offered to take over a project car and am undecided. A good friend, that is even more anal than me about restoration details, has a 1971 Dodge Demon that he has lost interest in. He and his father have several classic mopars. They basketed this Demon and refinished or replaced everything with NOS or refinished parts. They then sent the body off to body shop prison to be painted on a rotisery. This took 18 months. during that time they aquired a 69 Super Bee, a GTX and a 70 Cuda. they are up to their eyeballs in those now and the Demon has sat for 3 years with all the parts done and packed up in boxes. The body is in a garage covered up and has gorgeous paint (White). The hood is Flat black with twin scoops and a wing on the back. The bumpers are rechromed and still in the plastic coverings. It is complete and just needs to be assembled. They are offering it to me for $8,000. I do not believe that a 340 Demon would pull alot of money. So I am undecided. What do you guys think? I like some Mopars but the Duster/Demon was not one of them. It is a very nice looking car but just doesn't make me jump up and down ya know. Looking for opinions.
Thanks Bill
72 malibu Sep 9th, 08, 1:58 PM Jeeze, a real 340 Demon for 8k that is ready for assembly...sounds like a good deal to me. Does it have orig. drivetrain? I like them more and more because alot of those were sent to the yard years ago, and because the logo is cool! I would buy it, put it together and then see how you feel about it. You could always sell it after that. I know alot of time needs to be spent on it, but if it is all there I would go for it.
Whiskey Sep 9th, 08, 2:01 PM No, It is a numbers matching car except the engine. It was a 318 car and they do not have the original engine. It came to them with the 340.
Bill
fastkawasaki454 Sep 9th, 08, 2:52 PM I think it would be worth it. Ive seen a few of those cars pull some decent numbers at auctions.
Or if all else fails, tub it out and drop a 426 in there. :D
Hot66ss Sep 9th, 08, 2:54 PM I think they are cool, like said above if it is truly just assembly needed for 8k id jump on it!
figbash Sep 9th, 08, 3:26 PM A finished Demon just waiting to be assembled for $8k? What are you waiting for? Mopar stuff is expensive. A car like that should easily bring 2-3 times that much.
Tom
64BeachBum Sep 9th, 08, 4:19 PM I'm with these guys - buy it up - I think those cars are pretty cool and the price sounds right!
72 malibu Sep 9th, 08, 4:24 PM You know Dodge was pressured by religous groups to get rid of that name for a car, I just find that a bit unreal , even in the early '70's. Another reason that I would want one. I still think it is a good deal even on a 318 ride, especially after all the work done.
Whiskey Sep 9th, 08, 4:26 PM Yeah, but; Mopar??? Kinda like going over to the dark side, LOL. Plus I have been giving this guy $#@! for years about them. You know, more old parts and rust, How do you double the value of any mopar? fill the tank! stuff like that. Guess If I do it I am done having fun with him.

Its a 318 Demon with a 340 transplant. Not a true 340 Demon. Treat it like a SS clone.
When finished, N.A.D.A. puts a 318 Demon (high retail) at $11550 and a 340 Demon at $23500. I'd say you will end up with a car worth somewhere in the middle.
That said. Use your judgment on what you labor is worth. I'd offer 5k and go from there.
The Demon isn't the best looking thing to come out of Dodge, But they aren't bad looking either...
BlueSS454 Sep 9th, 08, 7:16 PM I have a couple Mopars in my stable. If it's ready to assemble and NOTHING is missing and the drivetrain does not need to be rebuilt, I would go for it. However, if something is missing...IE electrical harnesses or trim parts, the $$ will add up FAST.
Those cars are not bringing the kind of money that a 68-70 Charger or 70-74 Cuda/Challenger or any A12 car are bringing nor will they ever, but if completed and it's a very nice retso job, it would probably fetch around 15K.
FerrariTruck Sep 9th, 08, 7:23 PM only with pics can a price be estimated. but 8k seems steep for a not real desireable car unassembled...And i like mopars
barnfind69 Sep 9th, 08, 7:46 PM I agree, with the aformentioned. Parts add up in a hurry. But the value depends on how slick it turns out.
4-speed?

well at least it isnt a ford
Well, here is my take on it. Forget about the resale value, go get it and assemble it and drive it around and have fun. Too much emphasis is placed on what something might be worth nowadays, let's all drive our cars and have some fun for the time being. If I had the cash, I'd ask for the address and would be on my way on Saturday morning.
Whiskey Sep 10th, 08, 1:12 PM I agree with Leo. But I am a chevy guy and the only real reason I would do this is if I wouldnt lose any money on it. I talked to him again and the 340 is a core. He has a 340 that has been built by a shop that has never been installed for $1500. that would put me about 10 grand. Dave, LOL, that is how this all got started. My chevelle is done and I wanted to build something for my wife. She has been bugging me to build her a 67 mustang. I refuse. I would rather shoot myself in the foot than build a ford. So I took her to a car show and said pick anything as long as it is not a blue oval. She picked 3 Mopars! Damn it! 69 charger 70 challenger or 69 road runner. This is why I called my Mopar bud in the first place. To see if anything was for sale locally. Then he laid this on me. So now the build is up to $9500. If just assemble and drive. Now what do you guys think?
Bill
72 malibu Sep 10th, 08, 1:21 PM Welp, it still might be a good price, but I would only go foward with this if I was looking for a Demon and had to have this one for some reason. Your wife might not even like the looks of these so I would say , look for some of the other styles she likes , maybe show her some 65-7 Chevy II's, my wife was all Mustang untill she saw a '65 Chevy II. Now it is between one of those and a '64-7 cuda with big back glass - what ever you like honey.

i think you should have taken you wife to an all bowtie show, or at least an all gm show.

X2 as long as you have the time and desire to finish it.
Look for some type of Assembly manual for it, get it, and go through it. Take it with you to inventory the parts. Little things can add up.
olkickdown Sep 10th, 08, 2:57 PM I have a '64 Chevelle and a '64 Sport Fury. The Plymouth has a much better ride than the Chevy. Hands down. The Plymouth is maybe 8" longer but the weight is virtually identical. The MOPAR crowd is a smaller and, in my opinion, more devoted than the Chevy crowd.
Sounds like a decent deal.
Tony
Well if it was a 64 Sport Fury I would be on it like stink on s*#t, but it is a Demon. That being said it will probably run pretty good with a 340. I like quite a few Mopars and if I would add another classic I would strongly consider a Mopar, just not a Duster or Demon. I'm with you Bill a Demon just doesn't do it for me unless its Lime Green with a nasty big block and a four speed. I assume because it was a 318 car it is probably a bench seat with an auto on the column.
Chris R Sep 10th, 08, 9:51 PM Was the Demon Dodge's version of the Plymouth Duster? I have never seen a plain jane style Demon. They all seemed to be performance oriented or at least a fancy interior inside.
Burbank SS Sep 10th, 08, 9:57 PM well at least it isnt a ford
I was going to say that!
LeoP Sep 10th, 08, 9:59 PM I have plenty of time and the patience to do the assembly, buy it and send it to me for assembly.
1969 El Camino Dan Sep 11th, 08, 12:22 AM ... My chevelle is done and I wanted to build something for my wife. She picked 3 Mopars! Damn it! 69 charger 70 challenger or 69 road runner....Now what do you guys think?

Your wife has great taste!!
Love those Chargers!!
Save you $$ and find her a Charger you can build, if there's any left after Hollywood get's thru with 'em!!:(
I like Demons, mostly cause of the size and the name, but I bet your wife wouldn't want it, really. Chargers are much more cool.
Dan
Whiskey Sep 11th, 08, 10:39 AM OK boys I went to look at it last night. It is everything he said it would be. Although My wife was not thrilled with it. But the guy had two 70 challengers. One a vert and the other a coupe. My wife fell in love with the vert even though it was just in primer. The price tag................$25000 for a straight body and nothing else done yet. I can see having twice that into it, and two years to build. I swear she is killing me. I have a barn full of chevys and parts and she just wont go there. She wants a mopar. I am starting to think that I should have asked these questions before the wedding. So I am still on the fence about the Demon but I think I am gonna let the "I will buiild you a car" thing die for now and try again at another show.
