I am working a deal with a co-worker that is about to retire. He has a well built 454, th400, and hi-stall convertor (looks like a 9" or 10") and has changed his mind about dropping it into his very low mileage '55 Belair. We discussed it, and haven't settled on a price yet but he wants my fresh built and heavily beefed 700r4 out of my 3/4 ton truck. Here's what we know about the 454...trw 2399 pistons, 781 heads (large ovals, unsure of valve sizes), edelbrock torquer II cam (224/232@.050, .527/.553, 114 lsa) and intake, and a 750 vac sec holley. The engine was built by one of the best shops in the area, has very low miles, and internally appears to be in excellent condition. It was in a mid '80's camaro that ran 12.70's with 2.73's, radials, and no traction whatsoever. I think I can get the engine/tranny for my 700r4 and around $1000-1100 cash. I am thinking that this would be pretty sweet in the '86 3/4 ton (3.23 gears) with a 2000 or so convertor. I realize the intake and cam are "wrong" for a heavy truck, but I am sure it would feel like a rocket compared to the dying 305 thats in there now. Sound like a good plan? I have some questions though. Will I need a tranny x-member out of an earlier truck? Any driveshaft mods required? Where could I get a set of matching brackets/pulleys (no salvage yard around here has any big block stuff)? FWIW, I run a 355 in my '78 1/2 ton with a similar sized @.050 cam on a tighter lsa and it runs pretty good, so this cam shouldn't be too far off, would it? Anything else I need to consider to do a swap like this?
