Looking at a SB someone put in a ford truck. I'm told it's a 350 but have my doubts. The color is that weird blue and the dip stick is on the drivers side. Any ideas without checking the #'s. Any help would be grateful, Thanks Doc :ee

No way to tell without numbers. Could be a 305, 307, 350, or any small block painted GM corporate blue.

The Old " Target motors were blue, which the color itself doesnt mean a thing, who knows how many times its been painted. Look for #'s on the pad at the front of the block on the right side. Look at the distributor location, water pump, exhaust manifolds.

Pont engines sort of kind of have a SLIGHT resemblance to the SB Chev, especially the valve covers. Both have two bolts on each side which attach them to the head. But a Pont can quickly be distinguished from a Chev engine by simply looking at the intake manifold. A pont engine has a valley cover under the manifold that can be VERY easily seen. The intake of a Chev is BOTH a manifold AND a valley cover and it is sealed at BOTH ends of the top of the block and a Pont intake is not.

are there any general quick #s you can memorize for when you're sifting through a junkyard hunting SBs?
