How can I tell if my alternator is internally or externally regulating? I recently took my car in for service and as a "bonus" the mechanic put in an alternator he had because mine's bearings were getting worn. If this has an internal regulator, do I disconnect my external one? How can I tell?
Thanks,

My alternator looks like it is an external regulating unit which is how I'm set up. The car is hesistating, cutting in and out when you accelerate. I just got a new distributor and carburetor. It feels more like an electrical thing than a gas thing. Could this still point to the regulator?

Our Elky was in a local shop 2-3 years ago and had a new Alternator installed.
The old (original?) was weak and was Externally Regulated as the neat device still attached to the front clip testifies, and the new one is Internally Regulated which is easily verified by the new wiring plug and the Battery Wire attachment.
Everything that worked with the old Alternator works with the new one.
