When building a 383 sbc stroker engine, is it always necessary to use a small base circle camshaft for clearence issues. I am using Scat 6.0 4340 pro I beam rods, designed for stroker engines, these have the ARP 7/16" cap screws. Scat says they are clearenced for stroker engines. Thanks!

My 383 did not require special cam clearancing. BUT I am using an old Crane 274H, results may vary. Scat 9000 crank, Eagle SIR 6.0" rods, Crane 274H "3/4 Race cam". My block had to be ground like crazy, but the cam was ok. I will be finding out how it fits with a Comp XE262 in a couple weeks. I hope I don't run into any problems.

stock block, comp 280H, scat 9000 crank, stock 5.7's with ARP bolts, I had to sell the comp 280H and order a small base cam......

scat 5.7 H rods. comp 294hr standard base circle cam. a few of the rod bolts had to have very minor relief work. Ive always thought about the trade offs between the 2 different size cams. theres got to be advantages and disadvantages to both. 2 very good thoughts come to mind. Dave

We ran a 383 in a stock block with Summit Proline rods with a variety of hydraulic, solid flat tappet and roller cams (with up to .766" lift) and all of them were standard base circle. The key is the rods!

ZZ4 block, Manley Sportsmaster 4340 Capscrew rods, GMPP HR Hot Cam. - no grinding to the block, very minor grind to a couple of the rods, to provide adequate cam clearance, although none were actually hitting.

even with a mild cam and stroker clearance rods you can have problems..it all depends on the core shift of that particular block...if you look at the front of the block, theres a flat spot where the cam bearing is...the cam is supposed to be centered in that pad...a lot of times you will find its moved down..this can cause clearance problems
