my motor is about 6 months old 350 bored 60 over and it has new everything.....period everything...... and it ran with like 25 or so psi at idle and i took it to the mech shop got it out and it gets down to 15 and even 10 some times....it did get down real low once i shut it off and adjusted my timing and it brought it up to about 15 or so thats about it tho......what is there to do to get it to go up.......

first is the gauge accurate?second did the oil passages all get a good clearing and cleaning?what oil pump is in your 350? was the oil pump tightened down correctly?and you know the oil pump to block surface gets NO gasket!!did you install a new oil pickup? If a mech gauge,is the line kinked?
sxty9,I would find out why the oil pressure is low,not how, or a way to make more pressure!! there is a reson for the low pressure,ya gotta find it.
my newly rebuilt 327 in the old 62 k-20 truck makes 55-65 psi oil pressure, with a stock pump--67rat

the only thing that isnt new now that u mention it is the pickup tube.....but it was put to gether all the right way and cleand and all that.....its a melling oil pump.....when u first start it up its at 50 and as it warms up it just inchs on down there......i changed my oil and filter could the filter colapesed or something....

my stock 305 pulls 15psi at idle (700in drive), and at 2k its only about 25psi.

is this ok? i mean it is all stock. im not sure if the guage is accurate or not, soon i should have new guages in it. hopefully the new engine will pull alot more than 25psi at idle.

my friends 77 f250 with a 400m motor in it pulls 85 on start up when cold, and when warmed up it sits at 75, and when u get on it, up in the high r's its pegged at 100 or so.

remember,to much oil pressure will put strain on the oil pump drive gears and shaft--I use a high volume pump in the 427 chevelle, not a high pressure pump, that runs at 60psi cold,40 psi hot,and bout 80psi at wot, with mobil 1 syn 15-50 oil--67rat

well that should not be a problem, does the pressure go up with the rpms, and goes low at low engine speed?---dammit!is that gauge working correctly?your not gettin any lifter noise are you?--67rat

it runs real good the gauges are new.....its a mechanical it goes up with engine rpm

shovel,be carfull here!keep and eye on it,maybe an oil change to a heavier vis oil would help, but keep an eye on this condition ,If it gets worst, you got a mech problem,I like to think that 40 psi, little less, little more is a safe operating pressure.if you get lifter noise, shut it down!!
that 350 is not over heating,is it?
my old 305 ran for years with 5 psi at idle,15-20 at speed,BUT,THAT DONT MEAN IT WAS NOT STARVING for oil ,PLUS THE MAIN BEARINGS WERE TRASHED OUT--look for the common problems first as I stated!!keep an eye on it,and for god sakes dont run it real low----67rat

was the pickup tube to pump fit tight, was the seam brazed?

aight i had one or so lifters that were jumpers that were 1/4 turn off and we adjusted them and it has yet to do nething yet......and also my fuel pump is tickin tapping i dunno what the heck is up with it u can take a long screw driver to it and stick ur ear to it and u cna hear that sum buck real loud and clear....whats up wit that?????at low engine speeds is when it gets low.......

so do u think I should try a thicker oil and try it out?

My car runs at 12-15psi at idle and increases very nicely as the rpms go up. My car has countless 1/4 passes on it with no problems. If you build it loose, the oil pressure will be lower. Race engines are usually built this way. Rule of thumb is 10psi for every 1000rpms. If you idle at 1000rpms then you should be fine at 10+ psi. Check to make sure that when your rpms go up so does your psi. At 4000rpms you should be at 40+ psi.

I wouldn't worry too much!

If you used a bolt throught the hole in front of the block to hold the fuel pump rod in position while you installed the fuel pump, the pump push rod could be bent. A bent fuel pump pushrod sounds just like a loose lifter ticking.

Do you have a tach that you can look at while you drive?

I freaked out about a month ago when my oil pressure was unusually low. Then I looked at my tach and noticed the idle RPM was also unusually low. Then I remembered I had lowered it down at the race track to tune the idle circuit.

I mention this because you said you adjusted the timing and the pressure came back up a little, maybe because the idle was raised? Maybe what's happening is the RPMs are dropping lower than usually when you see the pressure drop. If so, figure out what's making it surge and drop RPMs and you'll find your culprit.

If it isn't engine speed related, then good luck, I have no advice.

Dude, you better get that stuff fixed, we gotta run a nice fair race when i come home next time...

Is it a high volume oil pump?

I have a Melling HV pump in my BB. It runs about 80psi at startup, when warm, it runs about 50psi @800rpm... 30psi @ 700rpm. I don't worry about it because I know it's the low engine RPMs that make it drop so much. That might be your problem, too.

and another thing is..... we ran the oil press line to the bottem of the motor and not to the back of the intake would the main caps pull more oil away from it than the cam would......

my carb i think is wore out and junk so im either gonna get a new one or go threw this one.....thats my surging prob.......

Thunder rember man im a leg less than u and im never gonna hook so u have me off the line no mater what.....lol dang I need to get a posi rear and some 3.55s.....lol

What were are the clearances in the motor? I had my motor built with lots of road racing in mind so its loose in the rod side clearances. Oil pressure is a bit down as a result. About the same as yours but raises up fine with the rpms.
