I'll bet there are a bunch of guys that wish they could buy that alternator right now for 1100., don't be surprised to see it hit 1500.+ at the last minute. They don't make them anymore and this is a real one and you don't see them often.

That is nuts. A friend of mine is an alternator rebuilder, he been in the same shop for 40+ years. I am gonna go thru his old inventory and see if I can hit the lotto!

For the record, I wouldn't describe myself as frugal :D, but I would have been reaching for the chute at 700.00 and pulling the cord at 800.00, maybe I am out of touch.15895

Jeff Dotterer just did this one for me and he did an outstanding job I might add. It was insured for 2K for shipping, I couldn't replace it if I had to.

Just out of curiosity, did they ever put a different alternator other than the 837 on L78's in '69?

The Paul Herd Chevelle SS Resto guide lists alternatives for the L78 (at least the way I read it).

"The standard alternator was listed as PN 1100834. A 42 amp alternator, PN 1100837, was standard with the L78 and COPO engines. A 61 amp alternator, PN 1100843, was included with AC or as an option. A 63 amp heavy-duty alternator, RPO K85, PN 100846, was also available with or without AC."

Wouldn't these be viable (and more likely less costly) options when doing a resto??

Thanks,
Mike

As I understand it there are quite a few mistakes in the Herd guide. The high HP solid lifter cars could not be ordered with AC and I believe the 837 alternator was the only one delivered with these cars. You can buy a restamp for much less but they are easy to detect.

All solid lifter motored Camaro's, Chevelles or Nova's in 69-70 regardless of engine displacement got the 837 alternator only. There were no exceptions to this that I know of. This meant all Z-28's, L-78's and LS-6 motors got one. 71 Camaro Z-28 also got the 837, but this was the last year of this part as 72 cars went to internal regulator alternators.
Hope this helps, Chris
