I've got a Muncie 4 speed with a Hurst shifter that slips out of 3rd gear when I let off the gas. I had a racing transmission shop look at it and said the rebuild that was done by the previous owner was a very good job - everything lines up and is set properly. They have no idea why it would be slipping. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff

Try adjusting the shifter throws to give it a bit more throw in the direction of 3rd gear. Sounds to me like it's not engaging fully.

Back in the day, that was a sign of bad brass synchros and worn engaging teeth on the 3rd gear. Try to adjust the linkage first, of course, but don't surprised if it still jumps out. 3rd gets the most abuse when power shifting - you just have more leverage and speed on the lever. i can happen to any of the forward gears. Hope it is just an adjustment.

I just had a Muncie 3-speed rebuilt because it would not stay in 2nd. Shifter adjustment did not help the problem. The transmision shop found 2nd gear to be beyond repair and replaced it. It was NOT a cheap repair.

Thanks for the info guys.
The shifter was installed when the trans shop looked at it. The stop for 3rd is set fine, all the gears line up, and everything worn out was replaced a couple years ago. I'm at a loss...

as stated in other posts ....... its more then likely the dogs for engagement are worn or rounded allowing it to jump out when you back off the throttle .....very common problem
