: 396 intake
70convt396 Dec 11th, 03, 4:23 PM I have a stock iron intake that is dual plane with ribbed runners, stamped hi-perf,and is a high rise. Would I benefit from an aftermarket intake? I'm running a holley 650 dbl pump,a slightly hotter than stock cam and headers. What do ya think?
stringer69ss Dec 11th, 03, 5:38 PM intake will be ok but a nice performer rpm or air gap would make a difference, maybe a little more carb also. Depends how "hot" your cam is and the heads that you are running. Just swapped factory intake of my 69 396 to air gap and new holley what a huge difference. just my 2 cents
70convt396 Dec 11th, 03, 10:38 PM Stringer- what size holley are you runningand which intake would give better off line perf?I'm using the stock oval port heads. thanks dave
stringer69ss Dec 12th, 03, 7:58 AM I am using the 770 street avenger (4150) with the rpm airgap I am using a set of "reworked" oval port heads have not been to the track but the low end is awesome, Good power all around very happy with the airgap and the casting is very good
can't go wrong
mr 4 speed Dec 12th, 03, 9:56 AM Is your car and manual or auto? If its a manual,I'd stick with the 650 dp if you don't rev it past 5500 or so.
As far as the intake goes, the original cast iron high rise isn't a bad intake ..its just heavy and a heat sink.A Performer RPM or Weiand Stealth would be a great choice for an intake.Another good move is while the intake is off is to install the GM lifter galley heat sheild, which help keep hot oil off the bottom of the intake..same principle as the air gap intake.
70convt396 Dec 13th, 03, 12:48 AM Thanks 4speed,
My chevelle has a slightly beefed turbo 350. Would the oil shield work as well as the air gap?I kind of like the idea of the more stock look, but if it made a difference the air gap is fine. Do you like the stealth better-? preciate the info- I'm a body guy - engines a bit greek to me.Oh, i'm running a 12 bolt posi with 355 gears if that helps you answer me better. Why does the trans matter so on the carb?-Dave :confused:4speed how can I tell what heads are on my engine, just saw your bio- I love the idea of stickin with the 273 gears!
mr 4 speed Dec 13th, 03, 8:03 AM 70conv396,the Stealth's vacuum tap for the power brakes, etc. is easily accessible for the fitting, while the RPM's is a little more difficult. You can read about GM lifter galley sheild here: http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=017865 And,the part # is listed, and you can get it at www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com)
You don't need the Airgap if you buy this sheild, and you can keep the more stock look.
To check what heads you have, pull your valve covers, and you'll find your casting #'s.I asked what trans you where running because most mild street cars with an auto "like" vacuum secondary carbs, while a more serious street car w/auto or a 4 speed respond well with double pumpers. And btw, thanks for the compliments on my ride..I love the idea of doing more with less ;) graemlins/thumbsup.gif
70convt396 Dec 13th, 03, 11:48 AM 4 speed- I'm pulling my covers today to check the heads casting #'s. Would my money be better spent elsewhere or do you think I'll realize a perf gain with the stealth over the stock hi-rise? I'm a family guy and money is always tight! Thanks
mr 4 speed Dec 14th, 03, 8:21 AM IMHO,you really don't need to swap out the intake..but,if you're patient and one comes your way at the right price, snag it.But for now,the 'ole cast iron high rise will be fine.
