In my new 383, I was wondering what was the max safe cam lift. I figured that with a Comp Cams XE284 and 1.6 rockers, the lift @ valve should be around 540 on both sides. Is this safe???
Combo:
Flat top forged pistons (11 to 1 comp)
Balanced and Blueprinted
Dart Iron Eagle 180 closed chambered heads (I know they're too small)
Springs are good to 600 lift
Comp Cams Magnum roller tip rockers (1.6 ratio)
Holley 750 DP
Performer RPM AirGap
HEI
1 5/8 Blackjack Headers
2 1/2in Flowmasters w/dumps and X-Pipe
Super T-10 w/ 2.88 first gear
12 bolt with 3.90 gears
All in a 3300lb 72 Nova and 26 X 10 Mickey's
Thanks
Dave R.

The best thing to do is run the numbers b/c it will depend on your installed spring height, sorta deal..

I bought a set of cheap, .600" lift, Z- type springs b/c I had rotators on the exhausts on the old 305HO, -601 heads I got and by the time I pulled them off I was way over the usual 1.70" or so.. Then I figured to better balance them, I am going to use a .060" shim on one side and a .050" taller keeper on the other so that my valve spring pressures are matched closer.

I mention all this so that you will know there are seval ways to put something like this together.

That and higher retainers are out there too...

I use a piece of 2.5" long finish nail ground down along with my 6" Dial Calipers to set my heights so this helps a bunch AND is dirt cheap!!! (You can buy a pair of cheap really light springs at the harddware store for a couple a/3 bucks too if you want to)...

And don't forget you have to have like a minimum of .050" at both the spring solid bind stack AND retainer bottom/top of the guide height along with rocker arm/retainer paper-clip clearance too..

Not to mention P/R slot/guideplate clearance..
