My car doesn't have air conditioning. In the dash above the heater controls there is a hole where a vent would be if the car had air. Is that supposed to be there if the car didn't come with air. I thought I've seen some that had a black plastic plate that snaps in there with 'Chevelle' on it. Or did it still have a vent there that connects to the heater/vent assembly. Somebody else told me no, that only cars with air has this hole. Can you guys straighten me out on this. If such a plate is around I need to find on.

Thanks

I believe that only cars w/ air conditioning came w/ this hole. In a car w/o air, the dash has no vents, just a defroster and the vents on the floor.

Dave,

They all had the cutout in the dash, non-air cars used a block off plate like you mentioned (think it said Chevrolet, but I can't remember and I'm 30 miles from my Chevelle). Air cars had the vent and associated ducting.

Non A/C cars had this hole blocked by a black plastic plate that says "Chevelle" in the center. Cars equipped with A/C had the air vents. If you find one of those plates, let me know, I need one also.

The plate does indeed say "Chevrolet", not "Chevelle."

Yes, the non-AC dash in a '70-'72 SS Chevelle or El Camino says "CHEVROLET".

The same dash in a '71-'72 GMC Sprint SP says "GMC".

Believe it or not some SS Chevelles had SS on that black plate instead of Chevrolet.I seen about 3 to date. One car was an unrestored LS6 built in Atlanta.I even posted a thread on this but it did not go over to well

My buddy has a 70 Malibu and I swore his says "Chevelle". Must have been a mirage.
Too much Chevelle on the brain! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
