Where the heck is Nor-Cal? ;)

What you *really* want is a box for a Jeep Grand Cherokee 1993-1998. Subject has been beaten to death and a search will tell you all you need to know.

BTW Scotty last time I checked we all agreed not to post sale ads?

I looked in the tech section in this web site and went with the recommended Monte Carlo box. I bought it rebuilt from a local parts supplier for very reasonable money.

It bolted right on with no mods.

Oh I know all about Northern California ;) I just find it waaayyy too generic since many people think Nor Cal is everything from the Oregon border to somewhere south of Bakersfield. I also understand about wanting to help, I coulda done the same myself. ;);)

But in the end I know that while everybody talks about fast ratio it is really the T-bar that makes *all* the difference. Which is why I have yet more spare parts in the garage and why I LOVE my second modified Camaro box. Thus my recommendation to buy something better :beers:

A Tom Lee box would be best, followed by an AGR, followed by a Jeep Grand Cherokee 92-98. All will provide much better steering feel and eliminate the over boosted pinky steering problem.

For those of you who dont know, go to the technical reference series pages of Chevelle Tech and scroll down to Jim Sheas steering pages. He has a spreadsheet showing what boxes came in different cars. It shows the T bar specs .I am running an FB code from a 93 police car. Same T bar as the Cherokee and bolts on. I hope this helps

I got a Tom Lee box direct from him. All the "bolt-in" steering boxes from other vehicles have issues, like stops that make you lose a ton of turning radius. I used a 14 to 1 box from a late 1970's that Tom removed the internal stops from, 12.7 to 1 boxes are a bit twitchy at high speeds and the Trans Am is perfect after a rework.

Look for one from a late 80's Caprice Police car if you can find one. Mine is out of an 88. With Tom Lee's rag joint and hose fittings it bolted right up in my 69. It definitely handles better than my 72's stock steering.

Im planning to just send out my stock 69 unit to a place like Power Steering Services and have them just rebuild it with quick ratio internals. No need to search for one and fix any leaks on it.

Quick ratio is almost a waste. The real gain is to change the T-bar in the hydraulic control valve.

I agree... I had a 12.7:1 box in my '66, and it began to have problems (was "binding" slightly over center)... I really didn't have the time (or desire) to take it apart, so I bought an AGR from Summit (arrived the next day, so I could get the car back on the road-had a road trip planned for the following weekend)... Same ratio, but with the stiffer T-bar, it made a HUGE difference in the road-feel... No other changes in the suspension/steering.

Next project, I'll probably go with the Lee box...

I just try to keep tellin' it like it is :beers:

Although I have to admit it feels like I am swimming upstream against the popular opinion of worshipping fast ratio as the holy grail. I have had a basic fast ratio and noted NO difference. I have also had an upgraded T-bar and noted BIG difference.

I have the experience and the spare parts to prove it :p
I oughta put that in my sig line...

Thats really a good point... Unless you are autocrossing or maybe roadracing where you might need every bit of quickness is changing direction, the Quick ratio doesn't seem as important...

what are typical Chevelle boxes? 17:1, compared to 12.7:1... Its not like 1 turn Lock-to-Lock... And on the street at sane speeds, how often does someone really need to spin the wheel that much quicker?

But that stiffer T-bar really makes it "feel" nice...
