I want to put an open air filter system on my 1970 chevelle malibu. I have a 350 and it has the charcoal canister on it.
It seems like there are a bunch of houses connected to the "snorkel" part of the stock filter system.
Can I run an open filter system with the charcoal canister? I need some insight on what I should do.

Yes, you can.
I believe you have a big hose coming from the canister over to the engine. This hose is connected to a T. One part of the T goes to a vacuum port on the carb, the other hose goes to the PCV valve in the valve cover. This will remain the same.
I don't know exactly when the change occured, but the charcoal cannister was a mid-70 addition. If (AND ONLY IF) you wish to remove it, it is quite simple. I have removed all the cannister parts and hoses and simply run a hose between the vac port on the carb and the PCV valve. I removed the hose from the steel line that goes back to the gas tank and attached a VERY tiny filter to the end of the steel line (got one from a cycle shop) which is hidden behind the brake booster. This cleans up the appearance under the hood, plus, a 35yr old charcoal cannister is no good today!
