Stock 350 basically. Kind of... kind of not. Whatever haha

Anyway, I posted a forum on here a long time ago explain my problem. My car will start but you have to put pressure on the key when you turn it. Otherwise, it'll just turn over. Sometimes that way, it'll start. But sometimes it won't. So when you apply pressure to the key and push it up and whatnot, it'll start better and faster etc...

So I asked, and one of the members said that it is barely making any contact to a rod or something like that. It hasn't been replaced since the car was factory made. And I decided to go ahead and buy a new switch for it this afternoon.

Have it with me, and will be replacing it soon. Just one problem, how?

I have looked in the manual but that is confusing to me a lil' bit. I have had much success in asking on here so I hope the luck continues!

Any info on how to do it? Or the steps? Let me know! Thanks!

i'd first look at the switch itself. it's mounted low on the steering column toward the floor. they can slip and get out of adjustment. easiest way is to drop the column from the dash mount to get access to it. may be as simple as loosening the switch screws and moving the switch to make better contact.

First disconnect your battery.

Your ignition switch is up under the dash mounted on top of the steering column jacket. It requires that you drop or remove the steering column in order to access the switch. (Tough for a thief to hot wire - tough for you to service.)

First of all be sure to loosen the fasteners that attach the lower end of the column to the floor before you remove the vertical fasteners that hold the column up into the dash. The column wasn't designed to just "hang" by the fasteners at the floor. Also detach the linkage from the lever on the lower end of the steering column that is under the hood right under the brake master cylinder.

Once you drop the column you will be able to detach the two vehicle wiring harness connectors that are attached to the switch. You will also have access to the two screws or combination of a nut and a screw that holds the switch to the column jacket. Once you have removed the fasteners you will be able to detach the switch from the bent rod that comes down from the column head.

Now take the new switch and use a small round probe or tool to actuate the switch through its various positions. START will be spring loaded position at one end and ACCESSORY will be at the other end. You will have detents in the switch from RUN, OFF, OFF-LOCK, and ACCESSORY. You want to place the switch in the OFF position. So go from the ACCESSORY position back two detents.

Now place the lever on the lower end of the steering column in the DOWN position. You should now be able to rotate your ignition key from START (full clockwise) to OFF (full CCW) but no further. You want the ignition key in the full CCW position (OFF). With the column lever DOWN you will be blocked from reaching OFF-LOCK or ACCESSORY. So now your column and your ignition switch are both in the OFF positions.

Carefully install the switch onto the bent rod. (Make sure that it doesn't come out of the OFF detent position.) Now loosely reattach the switch to the column jacket. Lightly push down on the switch to take any lash out of the system and tighten the fasteners.

The switch and steering column are now synchronized. Reinstall your column.
