Found this wagon on Ebay. It is located near me. I have not seen this car before and find it very interesting. Wonder what everyone thinks this is worth?

It will be interesting to see what it bids to. Too bad they separated the original engine from the car.

curious...........
look at the pictures from the mecum auction of Oct 2007.

http://www.mecumauction.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CH1007-60147

why does the engine look entirely different in the ebay ad from the one in the car sold at auction?
anyone a member that can look up the selling price in 07?

also note the original car the drivers side th eseat is ripped and in the ebay ad it has been replaced. Um unrestored huh?

When the car went through the auction, it had a 427 and now it has a 454? This story is full of holes.

The ad says one of two. Maybe that was the other one?

If you notice the other one in the old picture, it has a different paint scheme. I imagine it's the same car.

Those pictures were probably taken in '70 when they won the AHRA points championship, and the ad states the panel painting was applied in early 1971. I guess they probably did it to both cars.

The Mecum and Ebay car also have some slight differences in the graphics, compare how the Dick Harrel graphic is positioned over the red rectangle on the rear quarter:

So I guess the one in Mecum would be worth a good bit deal more with the original engine, and this one would be nice filler but worth a fraction with a replacement engine.

Andy69
Sep 5th, 08, 3:50 PM
A fraction? Maybe like 9/10... lol

I guess it would depend on when the engine was replaced and by whom

Here is some info that was posted an the Harrell site when this car was found about 2 years ago. I'll post some of the pictures from the site shortly.
James

Hey Guys. This post is in reference to a thread that was started on the SYC forum under the Fred Gibb/Dick Harrell section of that site. It is under the Jim Hayter Camaro thread that has been recently discussed. Posted in that thread, there was a picture of a Kingswood wagon called the Lead Sled. I wanted to shed a little light on the history of that vehicle and what I know.
I first became aware of this vehicle 5 years ago while flipping through the April 1970 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. I have attached the article. I noticed the car because Hudson Iowa, where the car was raced is about 8 miles from my home in Iowa. I had heard that the car was still around but did not pursue it for a while. When the picture was posted on the SYC, it reminded me that I needed to find the car. Fast forward to a few nights ago, I contacted the original owner who freely discussed the car with me. He stated that he ordered the car brand new through a Chevy dealer right here in Waterloo Iowa. The mechanic that built the motor for the car was also the high performance manager where the car was sold new. He still lives here in Waterloo and I was able to speak with him last night as well, his name is John Day. He was the high performance manager from 1954 to 1992 and traveled with the car when is was campaigned nationally. The car won the 1970 NHRA points championship, the 1969 world series of drag racing, the winter nationals in January of 1970 and third in points for 1971 just to name a few events. This car was also on a Fleer bubble gum card. This car is also the 5 time national record holder. I have just begun to skim the surface of its racing awards. The cars major sponsor was Quaker state and last night the original owner stated that this car was a Dick Harrell team car until 1971 when Dick was killed. He told me that being part of the team, they would pit with Dick and crew at various races around the country. He also stated that he was the only car on the team that was not painted red. He stated that Dick really wanted the car red but the owner though people may not recognize him for his previous accomplishments as the Lead Sled so he and Dick decided to keep the car as is. Dick did require that he race the car with the Harrell banner and change his wheels to American Racing wheels. He said that being a part of the team, the Harrell cars actually came to Neita Dargway in Cedar Falls Iowa to do exhibition runs. He mentioned the name Trip Schumake (sp)? He also mentioned a few other names such as Harry K. He said that he was provided Harrell team jackets as well. I would like your help to decipher the Harrell connection if possible. A couple of calls have already been made to members here but I would like to open it up for the group.
It gets even better. The car is a factory Biscayne Kingswood, L72 427/425-horse car with a factory turbo 400 and a 12-bolt posi. I am not sure of the original rear gear but it says DK on the POP. The original rear is in the car. The engine code of LS (L72 427/425)is also listed on the POP as well as the transmission code. The car has some very unique items on it. The car is factory dover white with blue interior. The car also has most of its original paint, no rust and a true 42,000-mile car. It has all stock interior and has never been tubbed, cut or caged. It truly is in remarkable condition. The car still has all four cragars that were on the car when raced.
The car was purchased new by Tom Akin of Hudson Iowa in 1969. John Day, the performance manager and wrench on the car, ordered it through the dealership. The car was raced until the gas crunch and then sold in 1973 to Leroy Bolton of New Hartford Iowa (8 miles west of my home). I contacted Leroy last night and asked about the car. He stated that he still had the car and that it had not been modified since he bought it in 1973 from the original owner, Tom Akin. The car had some panels painted on it in 1973 but is mostly original paint on the car. I was able to purchase the car at 8 AM this morning and is now resides at my house. Dave B. made the trip up with me to unearth the car and snap photos of the building that we pulled it out of. This car also has the F41 suspension, disc brakes, power steering and currently runs and drives great.. Of course the car will be restored back to its race appearance. I have obtained permission to letter the car as it was when it was raced. Finally, here are some pics of the car when it raced, the title, the POP and an article. I have also included some pictures of how it looks now. These pics were taken this morning. If anyone has any additional pics or information to share, please do so. I am also getting additional photo documentation team jackets and 8mm footage and other items that pertain to its history. I hope you all enjoy this story. Another one found.

This should be a little better. Picture #1 is from the 1971 IHRA rule book. #2 is from the day the car was bought from the second owner in late 2006. #3 is from some time in the early 70s. #4 is from 1969 or early 1970. #5 is shortly after the car was bought in 2006.

I see these pictures, are they of the car that is on ebay?
If so how is it that suddenly this car has ll the original stickers, graphics and everything yet it is a completely unrestored car?

This is the car that is on Ebay. From what I understand, the white paint is the original paint. The Lead Sled graphics were from when it was a Harrell Team car. The blue and red were added in 1973 by the second owner. The second owner remover the stickers from the window. The current owner put the stickers and Harrell graphics over the 1973 paint. This car is the real deal and has been verified by the Harrell family and former Harrell employees.

It is a very cool car with a great racing history.

IMO They should remove the multi color panel paint and paint it back like it is in the original pictutres. The Harrell shield logo does not look right painted on top the panel paint job.

It is hard to say what the value is.
Some old race cars go very high in price and others don't.

$20,800 with 1 day remaining.

I wonder if the guy that bought it in 1973 and recently sold it is happy with the current owner.

Makes me wonder what kind of money the current owner was thinking he could get for it.

Hi guys, was tipped off about this thread. I own the Lead Sled. I acquired the car with 2 business partners and about a year ago purchased them out of the car as I wanted it for myself. The past owner was more than happy with what we paid as it was nearly 3 times the amount of the closing of the auction. To address a few comments:

Chris R. : I can't begin to tell you the thrill of this car, its hunt, its history/documentation, etc. I have had 30 supercars and none come close to the bulletproof history of this car. Me and my partners did buy it to sell, and when it did not meet reserve at Mecum, I decided to buy my partners out. E-bay has been pretty successful for me in the past not only selling, but buying. Like anything else, it is what you make of it. :)

Joe58: You hit the nail on the head! I had sleepness nights on wether to frame off this car or not! I decided to integrate the 2 to show its heritage. I just couldn't bring myself to repainting it. I will not be the one to ruin the originality of this car. It is in way to good of shape. The patina is great.

Depley: Thats right, when we got the car it was "blank." Original owner told us he took the graphics off with easy off oven cleaner before selling. :) No way was I going to leave it blank. :) The graphics are hand painted as original. This car had numerous lettering/stickers almost changed weekly. So, what would be considered "original?" I consider this an unrestored drag car and for those who don't, thats fine. I did fix the seat along with some other minor items. It is still unrestored in my opinion. :) Also, this is the only Lead Sled. The 1 of 2 I am referring to is the other L72 wagon in GM's collection. The engine looks different because I had it detailed and some new parts installed. This car can be driven across the country right now. I even added a shot of nitrous. :)

Chevelle505: Come on by! You can drive it, pet it, whatever you want! :) I have alot of relation here and I am sure you are referring to my cousins. Give me a holler! :)

Looks like this car will remain to be mine, and that doesn't dissapoint me in the least. I would pay more than the auction price for the docs alone. The original owner still has numerous other items such as footage of every race, Harrell race jackets/shirts, trophies, plaques, etc. He kept everything. I have raced it at Neita dragway, drove my niece off at her wedding, etc. I even picked up a roll of carpet last weekend for my sunroom with it! :)

Thanks, Dave Belk

Hi Dave and welcome to the site. I hope you didn't mind me posting the pictures and info from the Harrell site on here. There were some questions about the authenticity and originality of the car posted here so I thought your pictures and write up on the car would answer a few questions. This is a great car with tons of history and it should be kept that way.

Mark, post a pic of your 68! In fact, drive that to Iowa. I will keep an eye on it while you are out "sleading." :) I passed on one in 1980 that my brother in law bought, and still owns! $1500 bucks back then. Call me crazy, but I prefer the 68's over the 69's.

That's a great car Dave. My grandparents had a 69 Kingswood, green with green interior and fake wood. Pretty sure it had something big under the hood.
