Hi, anyone out there using a Grant Steering Wheel ??
I recently swapped out my cracked, tatty original wheel..fitted a Grant, and now have a clicking sound when the wheel is turned.
This is related to the turn signals I believe..when it clicks..you can see the turn signal switch "jump.
Tried fitting the wheel with and without the spacer under the mounting adapter, which made no difference.
Looking at the bottom of the adapter, theres no protrusions, so no obvious (to me) cause....any ideas

Instead of ragging on the guy about his steering wheel choice, perhaps you could also at least post some useful information too? Otherwise the Thumper principle probably applies.

Back to the topic. Do any of the bolts that hold the wheel to the mounting hub protrude through the back side of the mounting hub? If so, perhaps shorter bolts would be in order or perhaps you could grind a few thread lengths off each bolt. I don't think these bolts go all the way through the mounting hub, however.

Actually, now that I think about it more, there may not be any interferrence issues at all. When you turn the wheel the cancel cam still has to move past the arms that will turn off the turn signal when you turn the wheel the opposite way to straighten out after a turn. While turning, the cancel cam will click against these arms and this is perfectly normal. I hear a clicking sound on my Chevelle which has the stock steering wheel and on my truck which has a Grant steering wheel. Actually, everything behind a Grant wheel and its mounting hub should be stock GM parts. If it was all working with the original wheel, it probably clicked while turning then as well.

 I would'nt disagree with your comments...just trying to replace my broken original wheel..with something that works.
Looks a whole lot better than it did...now have an operational horn...but can't stand the clicking. :noway:

Thanks Rich...temporarily refitted the old wheel and the clicking dissappeared
Comparing the rear of both wheels it isn't obvious to me what might cause the problem...to be honest, the wheel was cheap and I was keen to get my car driveable again after 25yrs in storage..
I'd tried to source a "GM" wheel secondhand Camaro/Nova etc...but parts are not always readily available here in England.
The Grant's better than what I had !!

Remove the wheel and put the cancel cam on the steering shaft. Turn the cancel cam as if the wheel was in place and see if you hear the mysterious clicks.

DON'T use the shaft on the cancel cam which houses the spring loaded contact to turn the cam. Those shafts can be fragile and evenmoreso with age. Grip the cancel cam by the rim to turn it.

Maybe the original wheel covers the mechanism up so well as to muffle the clicking? I just don't see what else could be clicking besides the cancel cam and the switch.

Personally, I DON'T like the GM wheels. Personal opinion, like restoring a car vs modifying it.

Thanks for your thoughts guys, I'll remove the wheel as suggested and check out the mechanism/cam.
Maybe I'll end up temporarily removing the cancelling mechanism..just to be rid of the clicking noise. :beers:

And if it clicks with the wheel on but the cancel cam out, I'm at a total loss! ;)

Steve,

It's possible to restore your original wheel if you prefer that style. It's not difficult if you can shape putty. Also, there are lots O parts on Ebay and CL. The Grant wheel will give you time to fix the original if you want to go that way.

Freeman wheels
I attended a car show a couple years back and there was a 55 chevy with what looked like a stock belair wheel when you looked at it closer??
It was cut down to no larger than 15? I never seen nothing like it.
As they are HUGE wheels this looked good I never did find the owner to ask?
I think oem wheels sre much beter looking. But Im old school.
No offense meant. Just not a fan of GRANT
BTW If you run into someone better Than freeman?
I would like to cut a two bar down and raise the center if anyone does that??

Thanks for the pic, I was thinking maybe that one. Looks like the grip area is a little thick for me, though.

I have the walnut 3 spoke.
on my, to install list...

the factory , tine hard plastic wheels(or the thin wood ones)
are hard on your hands..
plus, some of us are used to driving cars with .. thicker leathercovered wheels.

maybe thats why, when I was grow'n up (70-80's)all the cars had leather tied wheel covers, you know the ones leather with little holes.. and vinl. thread tie'n it to the wheel
