: Ran my 327 against my 427
ToocoolZ28 Oct 10th, 04, 6:36 PM I ran my Chevelle against my Nova, both are strictly street cars.
66 ChevyII SS,327 11:1 comp, Original 461 heads with 2.02 valves, Unknown rumpety hydraulic cam, L79 intake, Holley 650 double pumper, stock exhaust manifolds, dual exhaust. M20 with 3.08 rear.
70 Chevelle SS, 427 9.5 comp, stock 049 heads, headers, 272 advertised Cam Dynamics cam, Edelbrock RPM intake, Holley 750 vac secondary carb. M21 with 3.31 rear gear.
I drove the Nova, a buddy drove my Chevelle, we ran 1/8 mile but no timer.
Out of the hole the Chevelle spun the tires a lot, the Nova just turned them over about 2 times and jumped out about a length, I was still ahead through second, almost dead even when we hit 3rd, halfway through 3rd he just pulled away.
I've always wondered how they would do against each other. We had a good time.
Ron
Guess you could say your car won!
ToocoolZ28 Oct 10th, 04, 7:15 PM Yep, that was your engine Chuck.
It still runs great 15000 miles later.

427L88 Oct 10th, 04, 9:39 PM That must've been fun!
with the combos they each have, i would think with traction it would be no contest, the 427 would walk all over that poor little 327.
novadude Oct 11th, 04, 2:53 PM Just wondering:
Which car "feels" faster to the driver?

I just ordered a TKO 5 speed for the Chevelle with the 3.27 first gear.
It was fun but didnt get any pics.

RB69SS396Conv Oct 11th, 04, 7:23 PM I had the chance to do that once....
My brother had a 66 Caprice, 2-door, 396, 400, metallic pea-green; my brother-in-law had a 66 Impala, 4-door, 327, Glide, metallic pea-green. We had to. It was too obvious.
So he got in his car, and I got in my BIL's car, and we took to the freeway. The big block car would get a huge jump, like a car and a half, through its first gear; and then the small block car would start to catch up, and pass it about the time the BB car hit 3rd, and just keep on going.
We were shocked. So we ran them again, and again; and then we changed drivers, just in case. Didn't matter. It happened the same every single time. The BB car would 60' the SB brutally, and the SB car would catch up and walk away and leave the BB just as brutally.
I don't know what gears either car had. Both motors were pretty much stock; Q-Jets on both.
FWIW (which isn't much)
Mike Feudo Oct 11th, 04, 9:26 PM The 327 simply will not pull the 3rd 4th ratio drop with the M20 and 3.08s. Your 327 looks like a 350 HP clone. When there actually were 350HP Novas with 4.10 gears running the streets I don't remember any BB Chevelle beating one.
etracer Oct 11th, 04, 10:54 PM If the Chevy11 had 373 gears what might of happened?
ToocoolZ28 Oct 12th, 04, 12:55 AM Good qustion, but what would have happened if the Chevelle did too?

I have been in several Impalas (2 '63s, a '64, and a '66) with a 300 or 275 hp 327... two 4-speeds, and two PG cars. It is pretty amazing how well those little motors run in a mammoth car like that. Sure seemed to run much better than I thought they would have, particularly from a 30-40 mph roll.
I had two of my cars line up once. My former daily driver '70 Nova with a mild '78 350/TH350 (stock except headers and 204/214 cam), and my '65 Nova w/ a '69 235/327/PG (pretty near stock, except for a performer and 600cfm holley). We ran from a 50 mph roll (me in the '65, and my Dad in the '70) to about 95 mph. With the TH350s second gear, the '70 pulled the '65 to about 70 mph, and the '65 steadily pulled on the '70 once they were both in high gear.
