: fresh rebuild spark plug problem

Broke in the cam on my rebuild the 1st week of January and only drove the car 5 miles after the break in as I've only got headers(with collectors cut off) for an exhaust so it draws attention. Been so cold but today wasn't too bad(30 degrees) so I fired it up and took it for another 5 mile drive in the country and it really felt sluggish and missed quite a bit. Pulled it in the driveway and just for kicks took a peek underneath at the header primaries. The #7 header primary tube was wet as if spitting out gas or oil while the rest were dry. I pulled the #7 cylinder's plug(Autolite 25) and gap had been closed almost as if the piston may have pushed against it? Wish I knew how to post pictures with our new digital camera. It wasn't smashed against the electrode but the end or tip of the L-shaped piece(proper name?) was bent down and touching the electrode.

I put another plug in it and ran the RPM's up to 3000 and then checked the plug and it seemed fine. They were brand new plugs put in by the rebuilder. I guess it's possible he got against something and bumped it shut(remote chance) or may I have a problem?

I tend to think that it was accidentally bumped shut. I don't know how this would have happened if it ran fine before, but I have heard of the center electrode coming loose and touching the ground electrode. Beleieve me if there was anything wrong that cauaed that ground electrode to bend while the engine was running, it wouldn't be running now!

Hi, Scott. Greetings from Texas to the frozen North! My buds have told me it's been pretty da*n cold up there.
I have to agree with Saturnstyl. The installer probably dropped one or bumped it while installing. The motor'd have to have a LOT of dome on the piston, the deck at "0" or "+" and the heads cut quite a bit before contact should have been made.
I'd check the gaps on all the other plugs and open to .045-.050 if you have a good ign. system.
How's it seem to run now that you replaced the bad plug?

I would check the compression on that cylinder..it is possable a ring or ring land broke. If the compressions good..then its probably just an installation mishap.

Thanks for the reassurance guys. Runs a lot better(smoother) and no more fluid which I was assuming to be gas coming out that header primary tube. Hopefully just a fluke!
