: Time to put a real cam in my 496

Hey all,
After the latest round of 496 cam discussions, mainly centering around the talk of cast core roller cams, I have decided to send the Comp XR292R-10 back to Comp for a solid billet cam. And after yet another discussion with my builder, we will be going to something bigger. Maybe not so much in the lift department, bet he agreed that 254/260 was too short for this big an engine, so we will begin to look for something in the 260/266 range or slightly longer. We have plenty of piston/valve clearance and if this requires better springs, so be it.
I have enough time and $$$ in this engine, might as well get it right to begin with. And because it's only in short block form, now is the time.
I'll begin scouring the Comp Catalog.

Hey Ron,
I'm no cam expert, but Super Chevy or Chevy HP did a 496 build up a couple of months ago that made some big H/P.. I can't find the mag, but I did copy the specs on the Comp Custom Grind Solid Roller they used. They loved the cam.
It's specs were:
266/272 678/688 110 LSA

I thought about using it in my 427 project, but I decided on less duration(P/V clearance with my pistons).I'm going with a Lunati 502A5 in mine. Hopefully UDHarold or Wolfplace stops by with an expert opinion. Good Luck! Cary

As you know, the biggest comp xtreme energy solid roller listed is 254/260. But comp makes xtreme energy lobes up to 272@.50 (the available lobes are listed in the back of the catalog). Of note to you there is a 260 degree lobe and a 266 lobe. I had them grind a xtreme energy 260/266 cam for my 533 engine.

I would think the springs you have are perfect. I would assume what you have is somewhere around 200/500?

About exactly correct Joe.
At 1.900 they are 212 on the seat, and about 520 over the nose at .660. (although again I don't have the specs in front of me here at work)
Coil bind is at .755. AFR recommends .670 max lift.

Ron Ron,
Before you get a cam ground invest in a call to Tony @ AFR.
He designed the heads & is a wealth of knowledge regarding what works with these heads.
Tell him I said "bite me" :D

Mike,
I think if I call Tony, I better get the cam discussed before I say "bite me".
Oh, you want me to tell him you say....bite me!
Ha!

As usual, I should have discussed cam choice with you guys and my builder before I went out and bought what I thought I should.
I'd love to go with one of Harolds rollers, but since I already have the Comp, and since they are willing to take it back in trade, I'll persue that first. $300 is $300.
And my engine guy has an in with their designers, and can go around the cam help folks.
Whatever we come up with, it will be good I'm sure!

Yea,, I "go around the cam help folks too" & I use a number of Comp's custom stuff.
Tony is a big fan of Comp's lobes & regardless of what the Comp guy's say another opinion doesn't hurt especially with these heads as they do not follow the norm regarding splits for best power ;)
An extra phone call is still not a bad thing,, you need to remember, Tony talks to engine builders & racers on a daily basis regarding what actually works with this particular head & this is very hard information to come by unless you have very deep pockets & a lot of time :D
