: Boss Hog???

Anyone ever hear of a Boss Hog torque converter? Are they any good? I had a guy suggest this for my 70/468/T400/377 posi. I need to get a converter that has a higher stall than the one I have and this guy told me to get a Boss Hog. I have never heard of them, but it sounds like they are a little less costly.

Thanks,
Billy

Aren't these the convertors that are just cut open and the fins bashed with a mallet to achieve a higher stall speed then just welded back up? ;) j/k
I know someone that ran one years ago..worked good for what it was on the street(car wasn't run at the track),but not sure how reliable it would be in a true street/strip application making alot of torque.

And here I thought this was going to be another Dukes of Hazzard thread ;) .
I have an ATI converter in my TH400. The stall is 2200 and I like the way it drives. It launches on the track fairly well too.

Thanks guy's. I see that Harry's Hot Rod carries them locally. I will probably not be on the track very often (maybe once or twice a year), and just need something with a higher stall than I have. The one that I have was supposed to be a 3000 stall, but it seems more like about 1800. I am running a 292H cam and probably need a 2800 - 3200. My T400 is about to take a dump so I figure to change the convertor when I pull the tranny.

Billy,Summit sells their own 10" convertors that I believe are made by TCI..stall is 3200-3400 for $279
Sure,an ATI would be great,but us street guys don't have $500-600 to spend on a convertor.At least I don't

Save yourself some major headaches and buy anything other than a Boss Hog. They are junk. You may get lucky and get one that works, but that is a chance you will have to take. TCI, ATI, BTE and others all make excellent street/strip converters ranging from $230-$422 just depending on what you are looking for. I ran a TCI breakaway with about 2500 stall behind my 396 for years on both the street and the strip. It was a great converter and ran a best of 7.99 in the 1/8th. This converter is $229 from Summit. The converter is getting ready to go back in a 72 street Nova now. When is the last time you saw a Boss Hog sticker on the side of a winning bracket car?

I got the ATI converter for $200. I would steer clear of a TCI, I blew one to pieces and my tranny guy told me they were junk to begin with.

You will not blow a TCI to pieces. Any car running high 12's with street tires will never blow a converter to pieces under normal circumstances. Sure every converter company has their fair share of problems every now and then, but I have never seen a converter be blown to pieces in a street car or moderate powered bracket car. Bent fins, slipping sprags, or bearing failures are the typical converter problems. A Boss Hog isn't going to blow to pieces either, but they have listings for 4200 rpm stall speeds out of an 11" converter. That is going to be one badly slipping, heat building, inefficient, gas guzzling piece of crap. Trust me I was stupid enough to attempt to try a Boss Hog at one time as much as I hate to admit it. It may have stalled 4200, but the thing slipped like crazy. My shift light never went off the whole 1/8th mile. It was out after the first trip to the track, and a 10" TCI race converter was put in. A TCI converter will do you just fine.

I'll have to look into the ATI and BTE. I don't mind spending $250 to $300 for a convertor that is going to work. I just cannot afford getting into the $400 range as I am going to have to have my TCI 400 rebuilt at the same time.

Five important things with converters for trouble free operation.

First - 11" converters : 2400 is max stall speed for 11" unit. Anything over this go to a 10" unit.

Second - Make sure you get furnace brazed construction.

Third - If using NOS you need the antiballooning plate for reinforcement.

Fourth - Supplementary Trans Cooler.

Fifth - Avoid constantly foot braking the converter to foot brake stall speed.

the first stall i ever own was new out of the box was from boss hog and it came apart sending metal thru out my new rebuilt tranny (th350).........it was a 2500 stall and it didnt last 10 passes on a test and tune day at the track.......so i never bought one again......i was refunded my money back and bought another convertor from torco......and of course they didnt pay for the labor to tear down the th350 tranny to clean it out of all the metal.......and this was on street tires at the track in a 14 sec camaro.....so go figure......

for 10 years i have been beating on my 10" tci unit with slicks and nitrous of the line with few 10 sec 1/4 mile times.....and more 11 sec 1/4 mile times......it break stalls to 4500 rpms even thou its rated at 3500.....but then again the bbc has alot more torque
