: powermax cam for 400
C_Boyd Nov 4th, 03, 8:40 PM Well its getting time for me to start the build on my 400 thats been sitting in my shop for too long. What im wondering is, will this cam be very good for an every day driver with the ocational weekend at the track. I'm not too worried about drivablity since any thing will be better than my 350 with my 292/292 cam in it. the cam i'm looking at is the crane powermax series with a 278/290(222/224 @050) with .464/494 lift ground on a 114 centerline. it says its has a good idle which will be a plus to me. what do you all think?
One of the main things i'm wondering is what will the redline be? its saying its power band is only 2500-5500 which i think is a little short of what it will actually top out at, i could be wrong though. a lil help from someone who knows a lot more than me will be greatly appreciated.
thanks alot
chris

I would look into a solid cam for the extra power that it offer over the hyd. I would also call several cam company (Lunati, Crane, Comp Cam, K-Motion, Isky, and Lazer), and give them a lot of info about your vehicle. Type of information to include when seeking advice on a cam are:
compression:
Type of heads/cc
Trans:
Rear gears:
Size tires:
Carb:
Intake:
Stall:
Weight:
RPM Range:
I would also look into UDHarold Cams: Do a search and give him a call.
427L88 Nov 4th, 03, 9:09 PM The 114 lsa will definitely smooth out the idle. You might take a look at the next cam up from that, but we'd really need to know what kind of gear, stall, and other engine parameters. With the right setup you might even take a look at the F-278-2. Ask C J Landry how it works in his daily.!
C_Boyd Nov 4th, 03, 9:26 PM Well as far as the running gear and such, i have a 4.10 rear with a 2000 stall converter. I just cant get too crzy since im running fuel injection on my car and dont want to get stuck having a hard time getting it tuned with my laptop.
As far as the engine goes its a 30 over 400 with a .135 dish piston. The heads im not completly decided on but im thinking something on the lines of the 200cc Dart Pro1 aluminum heads. The intake will be a stealth ram intake with enough injector to cover the fuel needed.
That should be basicly how everything is going to be set up. hope that helps out

427L88 Nov 5th, 03, 9:35 AM That was important, you'll need to stay with 112-114 lsa with that setup for sure. I'd look at the next cam up the line from your inital one, but actually, what I'd like to see for you is a collaboration bewtween Doug Flynn, the EFI engineer at Holley, and Harold Brookshire, the cam desinger at Lunati, a Holley subsidiary. Not saying they can do better or worse than any other cam co, but the collaboration would probably yield you a 'symbiotic' result, i.e., the ideal EFI cam for a stout sbc.
68chevelle533 Nov 5th, 03, 6:34 PM The engine in my post is simliar to the one you are building. It has a hyd 224/230 cam at .50" on a 110. Once warmed up, the idle is almost smooth. It pulls 16' at 900-1000rpm. On an engine dyno the hp peaked at 5300rpm and torque at 4000rpm. At the track the best times have been from shifting at around 5800. I build it as a weekend cruise car with low maintence and resonable gas mileage in mind, but it calm enough to be a daily driver. It sounds like a lot of the 14 second cars at the track, yet still runs low 12s. I would think it would be very smooth on a 114 c/l.
C_Boyd Nov 5th, 03, 6:41 PM Thanks for the reply's guys. I think im gonna go with this cam, and if i dont like it, i can always change it when it comes time to. thanks alot for the opinions
