Boy,is this embarassing. redface.gif I posted awhile back about my new 383 not sounding right. The exhaust note seemed flat. Then I posted last week about my disappointing track results. Started looking over things on Saturday and thought I'd start by ohming my plug wires. Wires ohmed out between 804 and 1156. Put the distributor cap back on and checked the firing order - 5 and 7 were reversed! graemlins/clonk.gif Fired it up and was able to take two full turns out of the curb idle screw. It now idles like a champ at 800, drops to 700 in gear. Runs like a million bucks! Now I need to get back to the track and get that 11 second time slip.

We all feel like idiots at one time or another.I replaced the timing chain and intake on my wifes 70 olds, decided to put in anew HEI while I was at it.When I tried to start it I had nice back fire through the carb, checked the firing order all day long, which is the same as chevrolet, everything checked out.But when I had the cap off and it cranked over the rotor was spinning backwards, changed 7 of the wires for counter clockwise rotation everything was fine graemlins/clonk.gif

I did the exact same thing on an old motor. Reversed 5 & 7. I went in and reset my valves, and everything because there was a crazy popping noise and we couldnt figure out what would cause that. Then i figured it out, reversed them and she ran great. I felt stupid, and my buddy confirmed that i was indeed a moron. So i pass it on to you in good humor....moron :D

I've done it too on a fresh 454 rebuild. Popping through the Q-jet occasionally and generally running bad. Checked the firing order five or six times. Installed a 03310 Holley and it still popped. Checked the firing order for the sixth or seventh time and 5 and 7 were reversed, plain as day.
