For my new 454, I'm going to also put a new tranny behind it. However, how do I know what balancer to select to compliment the balance on the flywheel that will come with the tranny?

IMHO and experience, for stock or mild motors, factory balancers works best.

Well it depends on what I would need, too, which I'm not sure of. It's going to be my daily-driven 454 which probably won't see life above 5500 much except a handful of times at the track in the summer.

A GM damper would certainly be OK for an application like this. That said, beware of "stock replacements". Just about all of them are made in China of VERY inferior steel. Ask Hotrod540 how he feels about China dampers....

Hey,,, whatever blows their skirt up,, I have been known to be a little opinionated on occasion,,, :D

When someone asks about dampers in a performance forum without giving specifics, I normally go with what I feel is the very best part on the market.

That said I completely agree, a stock GM damper will work just fine on a mild deal, they have been doing a fine job for a number or years,,,

There are a number of very good inexpensive dampers out there with some noted exceptions & any one will do a dandy job for you Taylor ;)

Where could I get a stock GM damper, or is there a part number I could look at from somewhere like Summit or something?

I would also checkout a Powerbond balancer if you're looking at buying a stock one. Fully degreed and I've heard nothing bad about them.

What ever you wind up with just be sure it is for a 454 which uses a counterweighted balancer. Smaller big blocks use an uncounterweighted one.
