I was just wondering, can you get a ticket for slamming on your brakes when someone is tailgating you and making them rear-end you? Not that I'd ever do it in any of my cars, especially the '68, but I have to admit the temptation is there sometimes. Like if I drove some p.o.s. that I didn't care about, yeah I'd have no problem riding my @$$ end up on someone's beemer for tailing me too close.

Tailgaters help your gas mileage... wish more people would do it to me.

I tap the brakes with my left foot while keeping my right on the gas. If I can't see their headlights then they're way to close. It's fun to watch them hit the binders.

Sometimes I get tailgated so close that I can't see the headlights above my tailgate. I like to think they are just checking out my car, but it makes me wish I had a spy hunter style oil slick or smokescreen. I already have the machine guns, but that doesn't help much with cars that are behind you.

When your daily driver is a rusty POS like this (I drive it everyday round trip to work about 45mi), you can do almost anything and no one will screw with you. AND, when they do, I screw right back with them and they REALLY back off. This thing is made of THICK steel (even with all the rust) and gives the appearance of not having any insurance. Plus, VERY, VERY few cars can run with it on the interstate, so, they can't jack with me and then run and hide, 'cause I can keep right up with them. I've been driving this car for 46yrs and it is now an Okla City landmark! I LOVE IT!

Just put it on cruise control & don't worry about it. He'll get sick of it and pass you. Don't cause the accident. Or you could be at fault. He'll have witness. That you slammed on your brakes for nothing. Plus what about the guy behind him with his family not doing anything. I know it piss's me off also. STAY KOOL don't add trouble

Yes you can get ticketed for brake jobbing some one. In fact if it causes an accident where some one is injured you can go to jail and have your license removed for a real long time. Insurance companies will make you pay too. The best remedy is to ignore them or gently slow down to let them by. Of course it goes against a lot of folks grain to be the bigger person and be courteous and take the SAFE action
It's hard but I try to ignore tailgaters. They hit me it will be their fault, not from some "brake job". Not going to have some one hurt or killed because I was annoyed.

Jeff is right.

I am not sure where the urban myth can about that slamming on your brakes to crash a tailgater is legal.:D

This thread is gonna get good.:D

too bad most tailgaters aren't paying close enough attention to see those brake lights until they've been on for about 10 seconds.
it would be fun to rig up a windshield washer pump to a couple of nozzles on the back of the car that shoots a mist of light oil- like WD40 or something- at about windshield height.
i thought of this a few years back when i was driving a rusted out 74 Suburban with a rusted tranny line that was spraying atf all over the cars behind me. they'd get close, get their car covered in oil, then back off or quickly pass me and give me the finger..

I've asked a few cops that I have met over the years the same question and the answer is always the same.
If you are rear ended, you wont be booked ! The driver should leave enough room between him and you to stop in an emergency.
But if you are proven and found guilty of deliberately causing an accident ? That's different.
You could be liable for all costs, your insurance cancelled and possible jail time if someone is injured or worse. As tempting as it is, it's just not worth it, Especially in a country where some people carry guns !

I have a push button jumped across the brake light switch on my truck.
If the headlight are hidden by the tailgate of my 1/2 ton, tap it to light the lights, they get the message. I also have a sticker that says If your not a hemroid then get off my ass, but since your here how about clean out my tailpipes.

Yes and can lead to much worse than a ticket.. if someone gets hurt or dies. Knowingly engaging in conduct that could result in the injury or deaths of others is a no-no.

Best just to keep your cool, instead of a lifetime of regret.

When someone tailgates me, after tpping the brakes a couple of times I will just lift my foot off the throttle and let it coast to a stop if need be. Usually after I lose 10 - 15 mph they will move to the left lane and pass me.

If I'm on a 2 lane road I will try to move over enough to allow them to pass ... I dont like getting stuck behind slower cars either ...

But officer, a dog ran out and I had to hit my brakes!;)

We were traveling late one evening after dark coming down from Portage Wi. to Kankakee IL. to visit in-laws. I was running doen a two lane in IL. and a guy was tailgating me. I slowed to let him pass, but instead he just stayed right on my butt. I ran faster , he stayed right there. I slowed to 30 and he stayed on my butt.
Then the light bulb came on! (yep! had an idea!) I ran up to 95mph the reached and pushed the fourway flasher button (bad flasher so the brake lites just came on) I could, even in the dark see the smoke rolling off his tires as his lights quickly dropped back out of sight! Never saw him again.:)

Just a point. I would not have done that if there was traffic behind him or oncoming. It was an empty road except for us.

Been there and done it. I had it done to me by a young 19 yr old girl. She was cutting in and out of traffic and cut me off as well so I thought I'm getting around this A-hole and speed up to pass her which meant i was on her butt and about the time i went to change lanes she locked-em up (at 60 mph) I smacked her in the old butt. Long story short the cops came and I was at fault but got a big break.

What I do is simple... think they are upset when they started riding my rear, when I am done, they are extra P.O. ed.. For Instance, if the speed limit is 40 on a 1 lane road, and they are riding me hard....I simply let off the gas until I get down to about 20 and just sit at that speed until they get a clue. It really pushes their buttons.

DITTO....I just go slower...5-10 under normally does it especially with oncoming traffic where they cant pass.

My old 84 dodge omni had reverse to the left then up. Well some how I found out if I just moved it to the left with out going in gear, the reverse lights came on. When people would get to close, I turned on my reverse lights, and they backed way off.

I miss that ability.

Well I learned not to speed up when a car comes flying up to your rear end when it's dark out. I saw head lights coming up pretty quick so I sped up. Too bad those headlights were attached to a cop car.

At most I did 50 in a 45. But I didn't really slow down for a turn where the speed limit dropped to 35. At least I didn't get a ticket and it wasn't some super cop.

Back to the matter at hand. Tail gaters really annoy me. Depending on the road and traffic conditions sometimes I will just get on it and leave them in the dust. Sometimes I swear the Chevelle must have an invisible bumper sticker that says "ride my ass" that only idiots in SUV's and ricers can see.

Yes, it is illegal to brake check, it is considered reckless driving, my buddy got a ticket for it.

On the other hand, I had probably one of the luckiest incidents with a crash. I was at a light behind another car. I always leave about a car length inbetween me and the other car just because. Well, this kid was a ricer with a manual and he kept pushing the clutch, letting off, pushing, letting off. When the light turned green I guess he missed first because all of a sudden I see reveres lights and WHAM! He nailed the front of my truck! We pull over and get out and he asks why I rearended him:mad: I start freaking out and then a cop pulls up, he gets the kids story and then mine. Then he talked to us together and asked if there was anything we wanted to change. We both said no (I told the truth, he didn't!). The cop then says that he was sitting in the parking lot and saw the whole thing! He started getting into the kid about falsify a police report and a whole bunch of stuff! If that cop hadn't been there, they probably would have said I caused the accident:sad:

How about just checking the 'ol ego and pulling aside to let the moron pass?
Its not our job to play road cop even though they may deserve it..

Let them wreck someone else, you win.

Out here brake checking someone can get you shot real quick.

I get really upset, when people tailgate me when I'm on my motorcycle, or if I see them tailgate any motorcycle. I will generally look back at them, then get over and give them a hand gesture as they pass.

Exactly. I can't stand people who drive slow in the fast lane, always right next to another car too.

However, different rules apply during rush hour. When I'm in the fast lane behind another slow car or two and I get tailgated, I can't stand that. Me moving over isn't going to help anything. I did lose it a while back and almost put a guy into a concrete barrier. Totally wrong and not worth it.

Speaking of motorcycles. It pisses me off when sitting at a stop light and some guy on a motorcycle will go up between the cars and sit in front. I just want to open my door and hit them with it. Sometimes the guys don't even take off fast enough to get in front.

That must be a California thing. You're not allowed to that around here. When I was in LA. I saw someone do that, and I thought "what a dick" but was told it is encouraged in LA

Yes you can get it trouble for deliberately causing an accident, but 10 times out of 10 the driver that does the rear ending is going to get the ticket. The driver in the rear is supposed to leave enough room between them and the car in front so that they can react to the driver in fronts actions.

Remember that the cop wasn't there (if they witness it that's another story) so the cop is going to write the rear ender the ticket. What's the rear ender's reason going to be, "officer, I was following him super close and when he slammed on his brakes I hit him because there wasn't enough room." Plus, like Johnny said it's too easy to come up with a reason as to why you hit your brakes, a dog/cat ran out in front or traffic in front of me looked like there as going to be an accident.

DZ you need a front bumper on that beast and put a bumper sticker that reads "Ricers, the Other White Meat". Then on the back you need a sticker that reads "Defensive Driver, It is a Tank".... :D

I am of two schools. On the freeway I will slack off the speed until they get the message and pass me by.

Should I be on the twisties like I was when a late model BMW rode my bumper I sped up and let him try to keep up. He wasn't able to. Old Chevelle's, most assuredly, can be sleepers.

You know it's pretty funny. When on windy roads such as driving out through Valley Center. People in their big SUV's will ride me in the straight aways. (I usually stick to the speed limit, or maybe slightly over) But when it comes to the turns I usually don't slow down at all ,even when signs indicate to do so by 5-15 mph. When I come out of the turn I can look in the rear view mirror and there they are behind me by about five or six car lengths.

I can't stand it when people ride their breaks through the slightest turns.

Here in the mountains of WNC we get a lot of older people wealthy people from Fla, Atlanta, and from up north in the summer. They will drive 40 in a 55 and then brake for every single curve and there are lots of them. I guess they think something is going to jump off the bank in front of them or something. They even stop, put their car in park, and get out to take pictures of trees. I guess they don't realize people live and commute here. You come around a curve and there they are.
My brother one time was tailgated and he took the rear view mirror and kept adjusting it until it reflected the tailgaters lights back into them. Whooah, you talk about someone backing off real quick.
