Has anyone put a 30" tire under the stock fender wells of a 70-72 Chevelle? I'm looking at Hoosier 30x9x15 radial slicks #18210 actually 29.5 tall,I think they'll fit but it will be real close. I know radials don't grow like bias slicks.

Bob,
A 30x12.50-15 ET Street wouldn't fit on my '70...too close to the extreme lowest points of the wheelwell opening for my comfort. As you mentioned, I was worried about growth.
A 28x12.50-15 ET Street fits fine though (10" wheel, 5.5" BS).
And I do run 28x10-15 Hoosier slicks with no problems.
I haven't tried radial slicks...keep me posted...

Yes they will fit . They are used alot on these cars. I have been running the 29x11.5x15 Hoosier QTP's on my car and they are also 29.5 actual height. I just tried a 29x13.5x15 hoosier QTP's on my 70' and it fits to my amazement I have rolled the inner fender a bit and had to beat the frame in at a few spots but not to bad. I think they are what I will be running this year to get those 60ft. times down. I had some 1.38's with the 4yr old worn out 29x11.5x15s

They might fit but growth could groove the tires and take the paint off of the car or tear off fenderwell chrome strips. The shorter 10.5W x 28" M/T, E.T. Drags on 10" Alumistar II wheels bite better than any of the bigger tires we've tried. I think at 1.315-1.325 our 60' times speak for themselves. These tires treads are a full 11" and fit without too much wheelwell damage.

Robert,
I just put a set of the 9x30x15 Hoosier radials on my '70 and they fit fine. I'm 99% sure I used a 5" backspace Weld ProStar. No clearance problems anywhere. They run real smooth and actually lowered my 60' times. NHRA stockers use 'em all the time. I used to run 28 Hoosiers and by switching to 30's I lowered my trap rpm by 500. The car is actually faster now at lower rpm!! Good Luck.

HVY70SS, glad to hear that someone else is using a 5" backspace wheel. Was this a 15x10, btw?

I'm using Centerline Convo Pro's, 15x10 with 5" backspacing and most big tire combos I see require 5 1/2" of BS.

When I break down and buy some slicks for my '70, I'd really like to fit a 30x9 under there without having to roll the lip or massage the frame, etc.

Justin,
For my Hoosier 9x30's I use Weld ProStars 15x8 rim. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Thanks Heavy, the tire growth issue had me concerned,I've had 29" tall slicks on it before and no rubbing,so I'm hoping the 30" tires with less growth will actually fit too. With the new found torque, trying to get a little more rubber on the ground and its easier to do with heighth than width. Gotta put a little more strain on the driveline ya know smile.gif
