From this thread, http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=220315 , I purchased a new stainless vent tube and grommet to install where previously there was none. Always thought I had a tank leak near the top!

Anyway, I went to install it this morning, and....couldn't figure it out.I have the hole in the trunk pan in the same location as the thread mentioned above shows. But I can't figure out how to get the vent tube in place. From above? Frome below?

The frame of the car goes right under this hole. Is there anything special I need to do to get this installed? Does it go on the outer or inner side of the frame?
See this photo I took from below: Vent hole from below (http://www.mulberryhall.us/chevelle/VentHoleBelow.jpg) You can see the light shining from the hole near the middle-left of the photo.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

Could you bend the tube and then straighten it to the correct curves? Probably easier if you had the orginal steel tube instead of stainless.

Tom, I have attached a couple of shots of my vent tube. First insert both legs of the vent tube into the grommet and push the grommet pretty far up onto the vent tube. Then insert the ends of the vent lines in the hole in the trunk floor from above - you will need to work the tube a bit to get both legs in the hole. The long leg of the vent tube runs towards the rear of the car and along the fuel line (see 2nd pic taken from under car). Then stand the vent tube upright and a horizontal section of the tube should set into a clip on the wheel well. Then push the grommet down the tube and press it in the trunk floor hole to seal. Once the vent is in place, you can easily see from under the car where to install a piece of rubber fuel line between the vent tube and the fitting on the fuel tank. Hope this helps. Wayne

wayne, great photos, thanks! I didn't realize it stuck up that far into the trunk. I'm going to print this out and try to get it in place this evening.
On the way home today I'm going to stop and pick up some 5/16" rubber line to connect the vent; do you know approx. how much I'll need? a foot or two?

Thanks again,

Tom

Glad to help, Tom. I'd get two feet (and a couple hose clamps) so you can cut it to length while under the car. Wayne

Thanks for the help, but where does the return line go to? There was none on my car when I tore it down 4 years ago,

66 chevelles don't have a return line from the fuel pump. Vents down and thats it.
