: Mark IV oil pan needed for a 496 in a 1965 Malibu

I recently put a stock '65-72 repro oil pan on my 496 without checking clearance first. When I went to set the valves, I discovered the crank is hitting. If available, my first choice would be a stock style and depth pan with rails to clear a stroker crank. Does anyone know of any?

BTW, has anyone made a stock pan work? Are any of you running aftermaket pans? My only criteria are that the pan does not have kick-outs, must fit a 1965, and that the pan won't bottom out in normal driving. I found a pan MOR20451 for $153 from Summit. My concern with this pan is the 9" depth. I do not want to be scraping with passengers in the car during normal driving... my GF will be driving this car, and I don't really expect her to be completely adept at dodging the dips, speed bumps, etc that will bang-up a pan that sits too low. TIA

Anyone??? What are those of you with 496s running for an oil pan? Is anyone running a 9" sump pan on their '64-67 Chevelle? Some suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Wes

I'm running a stock replacement Summit $33 pan, it clears the crank, and rods fine.

Wes, Exactly how deep is a (your) stock type oil pan? Pat

Mine also has the stock Chevelle big block oil pan. What kind of con rods are you using?

Thanks to all who replied. The pan is a stock replacement from True Connections. Pat, from the bottom of the pan rail to the bottom of the pan is about 7.25". Thomas, the rods are 6.385" "I" beam from Speed-O-Motive (brand unknown on their rods), with ARP Wave Loc bolts. According to Speed-O-Motive, the crank/rods should have cleared the stock pan.

The crank appears to be hitting near the top edge of the oil pan rail. It can be rotated about 45* either direction from TDC #6.

If I were to try to dimple the pan below the rail surface, am I likely to affect the sealing of the pan rail? I can't imagine it needing much more clearance than it already has. Thanks again to all who replied. Wes

Wes, is the pan stock GM or aftermarket stock replacement. My 496 has Eagle 6.385 rods.

My 489 cleared a stock type Milodon no problem with Eagle rods.

Thomas, the pan is aftermarket stock replacement; I don't know the brand, but it is sold by True Connections as a repro Chevelle pan. I won't be able to work on it anymore until this weekend. At this point, I plan to spray it with some machinist's dye, and dimple from there. If that doesn't work, I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a notched pan. Thanks again to all who replied.
