I installed the cam last night on Jill's engine. I installed it "straight up" and after checking the ICL with the degree wheel it seems to be on a 105 degree ICL. The cam card says it should be at 106. Should I just leave it where it is or should I change it to advance it? I have a timing chain set that has the option to use a different location to advance it 4 degrees or I could go out and buy some bushings to get it to 106? It's the Lunati version so it's lobe seperation is 112.

69 396+060
9.5 - 9.75 compression ratio
"290" heads
T-400 trans
373 rear

I want to get the most out of the cam and changing it's installed position at this point is a pretty easy thing so.... Do I mess with it or just leave it where it is?

Actually Lance, it's advanced one more degree than the 106 called for, and I would button it up and run it.

Wow that was fast,
Yep I unsderstand it's one degree advanced now. Guess my post wasn't clear on that smile.gif I just read alot here about installing these cams 4 degrees advanced to get the most out of them and was looking for some second opinions on whether I should strive for that every last ounce of horsepower :D . I almost just told myself to leave it alone last night and continue putting things together and then told myself "one more day won't hurt, ask tomorrow".

The cam is advanced 7º as you have it installed (112-105). Harold likes his cams installed at 6º advance. BTW, don't let the markings on the timing set throw you, go by the degree wheel. Since the cam is slightly larger than the CR calls for, the extra advance is advantageous, it will build a bit more cylinder pressure. Run it where it is.

I think you're OK. 1 degree is not bad at all. Run it like it is. Let us know how it works out.

You have good intuition Lance, you should've buttoned it up! In this case, the cam card called for it to be installed +6 ( 112 LSA and 106 ICL), and you've got it +7. Just to clarify. What you read here might have been " use the +4 keyway", while Harold prefers more like +6 advanced when the cam is actually degreed. So if there is already +2 in the cam grind itself, plus the +4 keyway, SHAZZAM!

Hey, make sure you have clearance on the intake valve. Hope you checked that already! Advancing the cam will shhrink the intake valve/piston clearance, retarding will shrink the exhaust valve/piston clearance.

With this cam Harold told me anywhere between 105 and 108 and the car will run very well.

Thanks everybody,

Yep, Gonna just put the rest of the pistons in and finish the shortblock assembly.

The valve to piston clearance remains to be done. Have to work on the heads next then test fit them.

I just done the same with my 280/284F10. Installed the cam straight up on a Cloyes 3 way timing chain. Degreed the cam to the 106 ICL. Now she is awaiting the dyno. graemlins/hurray.gif

I put in my 280/288 straight up. I also did not check piston to valve clearance, and I had closed chambered heads with 10.88:1 pop up domes. or graemlins/clonk.gif :D

I think the car pulls well enough. ;)

The chain will probably stretch and retard the cam 1-2 degrees giving you your 106 ICL.

I put my UD cam in at 101 ICL (108 LSA). It ran for a while both on the street and the strip. I then re-degreed it and it ended up being 102. So it might stretch like mine did.

Remember that Lunati cams have 4* of advanvce built into the cam core, so if you adavance it another 4* you would be at 8* advance...
